How To Officially Embarrass Your Daughter With These Period Party Accessories

If you haven’t heard yet, a period party is a celebration that happens when a young girl, pardon me, a woman, menstruates for the first time and her family and friends gather to celebrate her new life moment.

In my day, I’m pretty sure my mom just gave me a bunch of pads, bought me an extra pencil case to carry my stuff around in in the hallways, and asked me if I had any questions about anything that maybe hadn’t been covered yet in health class. I didn’t have any.

I kept mouth shut and prayed to goodness gracious that my dad would never find out about anything that had happened, and, I have to admit, I didn’t really feel that much closer to ‘being a woman’. I didn’t know what that might mean to me. I still felt like watching cartoons on a Saturday and biking around the neighborhood with my friends when we weren’t playing hide-and-seek.

And so, the concept of pulling your entire personal community together to yell from the mountain tops that your daughter has had her period almost caused me to faint, the first time I heard about it.

Some time has passed, and in reflection I now admit that it kind of sounds cool. It now kind of sounds like a really healthy thing to do, to pull everyone together for a party-if you have the kind of kid who won’t want to hide in the attic for the next 26 years, and who can go along with the idea that every female menstruates (or, just about,) and that it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

That kind of kid might be hard to find, but maybe not. Times are a-changin’. A new doll has just been released on the market complete with menstrual pads so, I’m willing to go along with anything.

If you don’t have that kind of kid but want to go ahead with the party thing anyways,  well, here are some ideas destined to send your daughter beneath the floorboards. Have fun!
