Wine, Running and a Great Cause: This South Florida Festival Hosts the ‘Best Local 5K of the Year’

Wine, Running and a Great Cause: This South Florida Festival Hosts the ‘Best Local 5K of the Year’

Do you have a passion for wine? Love running? This November you’ll have a chance to combine these two interests, and put your efforts towards a fantastic cause.

Drinking samples of alcohol might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of joining your local 5K race, but this fall you’ll be able to do just that, and more.

If you find yourself in the Miami area this November, strap on your athletic shoes and get yourself to the 2017 Live Ultimate Seed Food & Wine 5K Run.

The event is being run as a partnership between Live Ultimate, a Miami Beach health and wellness brand, and the Seed Food & Wine Festival, the largest plant-based festival in the US.

Taking place on Saturday November 4th in Miami, Florida, it promises to feature “the best in health and wellness”. It will also be raising funds to support Health In The Hood, a local South Florida non-profit that helps Americans living in ‘food deserts’.

No Grocery Store, No Car

What’s a ‘food desert’? The American Nutrition Association defines it as “parts of the country vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods…largely due to a lack of grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and healthy food providers.”

Shockingly, the U.S Department of Agriculture estimates that around 23.5 million Americans currently live in a food desert. This is disastrous. It means the residents’ nearest super market is more than 10 miles away, and they have no access to a car on a regular basis.

Thankfully, organizations like Health in the Hood are around to help.

Health in the Hood establishes community gardens to grow fresh fruits and vegetables with residents. It also provides youth in these areas with access to fitness classes, and educational workshops on how to read food labels to create a balanced diet and a positive future for themselves and their families.

Celebrities and Mindfulness

Live Ultimate Seed Food & Wine Festival 5K

So, what’s in it for participants? The biggest gift of course, is enjoying the feeling that comes with doing something good for others. Apart from that, if you participate in the 5K run (3.1 miles), you’ll receive a premium event t-shirt, green race swag bag, race bib with chip timing, as well as post-race food and drinks.

You’ll also have access to a yoga class and guided meditation after the run, as well as the Seed Tasting Village at around 11 a.m.

The event, which partnered with tennis superstar Serena Williams in 2014 and 2015, promises to be a success for its 15th edition.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Seed Food & Wine Festival as they share the same philosophy of conscious and mindful plant-based living and the mission of living our best life possible,” says Live Ultimate founder Marc Wachter.

“The festival’s core mission is all about creating consciousness and wellness in our community,” explains Seed’s co-founder Alison Burgos. “We are so excited to be partnering with Live Ultimate in bringing a fitness component so everyone can be part of the festival. We think this year’s 5K will get all of South Florida up, out of their chairs and moving.”
