Your Bad Diet Could Be Affecting More Than Just Your Waistline

While we know eating fatty and unhealthy foods can lead to weight gain and other health problems, it could also be affecting your personality and how you behave, new research suggests.

Eating high fat foods can lead to issues with obesity and heart disease but may also contribute to an increase in depression and other psychological and behavioural disorders, according to a study by researchers from Louisiana State University and published in Biological Psychiatry.

For the study, researchers took organisms from the gut bacteria of mice who were fed a diet high in fats and placed them into the gut of mice who were not obese.  It was found that the microbiome that had been linked to higher levels of fat contributed to behavioural issues that included both increased anxiety and impaired memory.

The researchers concluded that a diet high in fats could lead to a change in the mix of bacteria in the gut, the gut microbiome, and possibly lead to an increase a person’s susceptibility to mental disorders.
