I recently (Sept. 27 at 8:45 to be precise) had an inguinal hernia laparoscopic surgery that was done by Dr. Pires. So happy I went for the laparoscopic surgery, recovery was so easy with very minimal pain. Dr. Pires is the only surgeon in the Ottawa region that performs laparoscopic surgery for an hernia. When I first met Dr Pires he took the time to clearly explain the procedure in a way that I fully understood the process. He also took the time to answer any and every question that I had. His after surgery follow up (3 weeks after) was also great as he again took the time to answer all my questions. His admin assistant Dominique is so nice. She also is ready to answer any question and as with Dr. Pires she also made me feel very at ease of the future procedure. I highly recommend Dr Pires. Excellent surgeon! Definitely one of the top and most experienced hernia surgeons in the Ottawa area. Highest volume hernia surgeon in eastern Ontario. During my consultation/diagnosis appointment, Dr. Pires gave me a full explanation of hernias: including what they are, types of hernias, hernia causes, complications, and details and risks of each of the surgical options. Dr. Pires prefers to do the TEP method instead of the TAPP method. ("TAPP has been reported to be easier to learn but has a higher incidence of visceral injury, postoperative pain, and longer operative time. On the other hand, TEP avoids violation of the peritoneal cavity but is associated with a longer learning curve and a lesser incidence of vascular and visceral injury"). He explained I had an inguinal hernia and offered me two surgical options: 1. open or laparoscopic surgery hernia repair with velcro mesh at the Montfort Hospital (~9-15 months wait list) OR 2. open surgery hernia repair with velcro mesh at the Kemptville Hospital (~6-month wait list and only available for young healthy patients (I'm 61 years old)). During the surgery, he discovered that I actually had a relatively rare type of hernia called the Pantaloon hernia, otherwise known as a saddlebag hernia, which is a combination of a direct and indirect hernia. The hernial sac pushes through both sides of the inferior epigastric vessels. The 'double' hernia resulted in a longer operation. It's been 8 months since I had the surgery and have been very happy with the results.

Dr. Pires did my hernia surgery in July using TEP laparoscopic procedure vs TAPP or traditional process at Montfort. Dr. Pires is an excellent surgeon with great skills and very friendly. I was walking the next day with little pain, and I had excellent recovery. Dominque his admin assistant is also very polite and friendly.

Dr. Pires took great care of my Dad when he needed hernia surgery. He was kind and patient with us. He immediately made us feel comfortable and reassured us that surgery was the best option. Dominique was thorough and very pleasant. The entire staff at the Montfort was friendly and efficient. We could not have asked for a better experience!

Doctor Jose Pires is an excellent surgeon and a caring doctor. He operated on me in 2023, and performed a modified radical mastectomy. He booked my surgery quickly so I did not have to wait too long. His approach was comforting and reassuring. He was very thorough with the overall process and follow-up care. I would highly recommend him. Thank you Dr. Pires. Once again, I have been blessed. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at Christmas 2022. When I met Doctor Pires I was astounded. He delivered the news of the coming treatment in a clear, detailed and linear way. He was comforting and made me very comfortable. He was patient and kind. He is very professional but also has a sense of humour.
Now for the important part of this story. One and a half months later I am post operative and got good news today. Without going into detail, it’s apparent that the surgery was done with all bases covered.
Dr Pires is another one of my angels. Thank you!

In November 2022, Dr. Pires and his resident, performed an laparoscopic appendectomy's as my visit to emergency. The service and professionalism from Dr. Pires and his team have been fantastic, from the pre-care, surgery, hospital post-care and follow-up from his office. I would recommend Dr. Pires to anyone needing surgery under his expertise.
