While going through a nasty (highly contested divorce, I was privileged to be referred to the mental health unit and received excellent care. They help me in dealing with the emotional pain and turmoil by meeting with me regularly and supporting me by providing tools to put into practice as well as advice to keep me from loosing my mind. I owe them so much for the attention and care they provided me. I will forever be grateful.
Staff at patient intake desks at the front of the hospital are consistently rude, abrasive and act in a superior "You are disturbing my day" manner. They ask reason for visit and take health insurance information without even acknowledging the patient as a human being. Ask a question and the answer (if even given) is terse and dismissive. The volunteers in the lobby are very helpful and once when I was in the front waiting area a male cleaner was doing the job of the intake staff by directing people where to sit and which area of the hospital to go to because NONE of the front desk staff was doing their job. Also avoid their mamogram clinic. The nurses and technicians are rude, rough and unhelpful. The doctor who was reading my tests results kept on ordering more and more mamogram pictures (total of 20 in one visit) and refused to come out from his little room to explain why. I assume he needed more pictures for the class he was teaching at University of Ottawa Medical school and not because there was any type of problem... because the Civic Hospital FOUND NOTHING to warrant more than the usual 4 mamogram images.
Emergency unit at the Montfort is a disgrace. Even the ones that are puking their guts up from the flu and need a simple ivy drop to be hydrated (simple) aren’t attended too. Staff isn’t helpful, triage system doesn’t work. You will wait hours 8+ and never see a doctor. Do yourselves a favour and go to the General or the civic.
On 4 serious diagnoses, they were all wrong. They diagnosed a pericardial effusion with tamponade as goût. I went several days later into cardiac arrest. Dismissed Angio Sarcoma tumor as being nothing. But would remove the tumor if it bothered me. 4 doctors saw it and not one biopsy. Fortunately I was diagnosed at the Civic. Prescribed Dapson for itching. Dapson is used for those with leprosy. The Civic hadn't seen this used in 30 years. It needed to be reversed using méthylène blue. On a blockage of the prostate they threw out the liquid. So well never know. Not recommended. Indifference and incompetence.
