How Much Silence Do You Need Daily? This Much.

A little can go a long way, and a lot, even further.

Life is noisy. And it seems to be getting noisier. Part of this is due to things like more cars on the road and larger populations, but a lot of it comes down to electronics. When you can now watch TV in your hand on the subway and listen to whatever music you want to for hours on end, it’s quite easy for your brain and ears to take a beating.

According to neuroscientists at Stanford, when listening to music our most intense brain activity happens in the silences between notes.  Are conversations the same? It’s hard to say but like any activity, sometimes it’s best when you can get some rest away from it.

Exactly how much silence each day is recommended depends on who you talk to. Some say just 2 minutes a day can change your life. I’m going to argue that a bit more than 2 could be needed, but at least getting some is a good start.

Those who meditate often recommend starting with a 10-minute practice of silent reflection. This can be enough to clear some of the baggage from your mind, and lower your cortisol levels so that stress dips, something that’s been known to rise with too much noise.

If you can get as much as two hours of silence, you could even regenerate some brain cells. This could improve your memory, learning and emotional control, according to one study
