Such an attentive Dr. really brought my nerves down. So knowledgeable and kind. Bonded over being from South Africa. Love that he uses evidence based clinical advice.

Saw him around 2008 (over 15 years ago!) and still to this day consider this one of my worst experiences with a doctor and get upset when I think of it. I feel sorry for myself as a young woman at the time. First issue was that I was left waiting on the bed/table for him to arrive for what seemed like 30 minutes or more as I was shivering naked with only the medical cover. Second issue was that he said he was going to check inside my anus with his finger once he was already in the process of doing a Pap test. I was not warned prior to this that he would check there, and was already in a vulnerable state and didn’t feel like I had the chance to provide informed consent, or that I even had the option to say « no ». It caught me off guard. Third issue (and the most upsetting to this day) is that I brought up pain issues that I was experiencing during intercourse with my husband. All this doctor did was prescribe numbing cream!! I later on was helped by other medical professionals who actually took time to understand the issue and who care about a woman’s well-being during sex. I think back that in my early twenties a male doctor provided me numbing cream for my harmful pain during sex and I can barely believe how inconsiderate and sexist and toxic that was. I sincerely hope he has matured himself since then. I still consider this experience to have negatively affected me, 16 years later. Sad to think he served at a university where many of his patients would be naive as I was at the time and would have taken his Ty word as gospel when in reality it did not take our interests into consideration.

Dr. Tankel is the best doctor I've ever seen in my life. I saw him at U of A's Health Centre for IUD insertion. He was so caring, attentive, and very knowledgeable. He listened carefully to all my concerns and provided clear answers. His way of talking to me helped me stay calm during the insertion. He also has a very humorous and intellectual personality. His nurses at the Centre were incredibly friendly and helpful.

PS: Dr Tankel is worth the wait (Lastly, he might be the most enthusiastic person I met in Canada who loves to laugh)

Dr. Tankel is the most amazing, kind, and knowledgable doctor I have ever had. I came to him with a very complex medical history and he did not shy away from taking me on as a patient and work diligent with me to give me my life back. I am so grateful and reassured to be under the care of Dr. Tankel. He is a blessing to his patients. Yes, the wait is long, but it is more than worth it for having such a phenomenal doctor.

Dr Tankel is wonderful. I was under his care for birth control needs when I was younger and then later on when I was looking to get pregnant at an older age. He took such good care of me and helped me get pregnant and deliver a healthy baby. He was knowledgeable about my age and chronic health condition, referred me for appropriate testing to ensure baby was healthy throughout pregnancy and did an incredible c section on me - with a very inconspicuous scar. Dr Tankel is friendly, funny, probably the most knowledgeable OBGYN in the city and overall, a really good human. I feel fortunate to be his patient.
The wait can be long - it’s just the reality of being his patient. I find bringing a book or office work makes the time at least feel useful.
Dr Tankel’s office staff can come across as rude which seems to be consistent to all patients - no need to take it personally.

Dr J. Tankel is the most personal OB/GYN with incredible knowledge & experience in Obstetrics with

Dr. Tankel is very knowledgeable and kind but his staff is incredibly challenging to talk to. I've had more than a few negative experiences where I received more attitude from them than I deserved. I visited Dr. Tankel initially at the UofA clinic where the staff is incredible, which is why I was so shocked when I went to his actual clinic.

In terms of time, he tends to run pretty late (but this is the norm at UofA clinic). I would recommend having nothing planned for 4 hours after your booked appointment.

Rude and condescending staff. Dr Tankel is no better. He pays no attention to concerns you have. He makes you feel very guilty and anxious. It's his way or the highway even though he doesn't take the time to get to know you or your issues. As I can see on other reviews, others have experienced the same. His arrogance and lack of compassion lead him to miss obvious issues. And then he blames you and makes you feel guilty for not trusting every word he says. STAY FAR AWAY!

Horrible experience. He has a few jokes to lighten the mood, but that’s about it. I went to him to try and figure out why I wasn’t getting pregnant. Been trying for years. He diagnosed me with unexplained infertility and sent me to a fertility clinic, after months of them taking my money and not looking into things further, i was diagnosed with suspected Endometriosis. His response when I went back? Go on the birth control pill or go back to the fertility clinic….. hahahaha what a joke of a doctor.
