After suffering for over 5 months with esophageal issues and seeing multiple specialists who continuously misdiagnosed my issue as a simple infection, I was blessed to have been referred to Dr. John Yee at VGH. From our very first meeting and thereafter I knew I was working with one of the best. Dr Yee immediately suspected the issue was esophageal cancer and in a very straight forward and honest manner spent considerable time walking me through his prognosis and plan of treatment. I had my surgery about a month ago and all signs are it was a complete success.
Although I will now battle the remaining cancer, Dr. Yee without a doubt saved my life and gave me hope for the future. Beyond his impeccable skills, Dr. Yee was one of the most compassionate and thoughtful doctors I have ever met. He came to visit me almost every day during my four week recovery, always kept me apprised of all developments and addressed all of my questions and concerns. And this level of care extended to all of his staff in the Thoracic Surgery Department at VGH from some of the finest nurses I have ever met to outstanding support staff.
I will be forever grateful to Dr. John Yee and his team at VGH.

I am wonderfully blessed to have Dr. Yee as my thoracic surgeon. Not only is he an expert in his field, but he knows how to relate to his patients at their level. He and his team removed a very small tumour on my middle lobe (right lung) in July 2020 at VGH, which turned out to be a stage 1 lung cancer. Because it was the height of Covid time, my first encounter with Dr. Yee was over the phone. I can tell right away that he is not only a seasoned surgeon as he was able to explain and answer my questions clearly about my medical situation and the surgery I was going to have, but he is kind, patient and warm as well. Because I already had cancer before, talking to him that first time even remotely, calmed me down and put me in a positive place again. As I get to meet him in person later on, these first impressions were affirmed even more. He listens to his patients attentively, has that personal rapport with them and is always reassuring. During my confinement at the hospital, I remember him making his rounds around 6:30 at night time, even if he looked very tired already. His dedication to his patients and his work must have also inspired his team, because they too have shown the same level of caring and professionalism. From Elizabeth, Dr. Yee's secretary to the nurses, resident doctors, nurse practitioners, etc. at 12th floor in VGH, the extent of efficiency and compassion of these people even if they are so busy, are remarkable. I recall Elizabeth booking me right away for the next available time, as soon as my first scheduled surgery appointment was cancelled. This may be a routine thing to them but it makes a difference to us patients. The quality overall care that I got is reflective of the hospital administration as well. From the spectacular view I have from my room to feeling safe on the 12th floor amidst this pandemic, kudos to VGH. I could go on and on with all these beautiful experiences I had, but I just want to end with a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Yee and his team. You guys are unbelievable in what you do and I appreciate it so much!

Dr. Yee performed a double lung transplant on my mom in January 2020. He saved her life. He checked on her daily during her recovery. Like every other review here, I have to describe Dr. Yee as absolutely remarkable in every regard you could hope for in a doctor. Brilliant, skilled, compassionate, selfless. My mom is able to live a full life, and able to look far into the future with confidence that she will not just be okay, but she will be able to thrive. Dr. Yee performed a miracle for my family & to this day I get tears in my eyes when I think about how lucky the world is to have people like Dr. Yes willing to dedicate their lives to saving others. We are FOREVER grateful.

I am forever grateful to Dr. Yee who performed a Hiatal Hernia surgery for me 3 months ago. I am doing so much better, as my condition was severe, and now I can live a normal, healthy life. It is rare to meet such a conscientious and professional medical practitioner like Dr. Yee. I wish Dr. Yee all the best with the many challenges he will face in this time of uncertainty in health care system.

I have just returned home from having a lobectomy performed by DR. Yee and his team. From the first visit with Dr. Yee I was wowed by how wonderfully warm , caring, knowledgeable and respectful he is. I had never meet a medical professional like him. He was patient and very helpful in explaining my condition, answering my questions, and outlining the options available should the condition develop. We ended up making a decision to remove a portion of my left lung. I cannot speak highly enough of the absolutely wonderful experience I had in moving forward with the operation. Every member of his team and the other staff on the 12th floor of VGH was respectful, very informative, friendly and caring. After the operation while my son-in-law was visiting DR. Yee stopped by to see how I was doing. He spent well over 20 minutes with us just chatting about a variety of topics of mutual interest. I have never had the experience before. Every member of his team was very highly professional and very warm and friendly. They reflected Dr. Yee's values regarding caring for his patients. I could not have asked for better care. Today is Sunday and less than an hour ago DR. Yee called to see how I was doing. I have never had a doctor do that. The whole experience with Dr. Yee, his team and the staff on the 12th floor were incredible. I am honoured that he took me on as a patient and that I have benefited from the care that he has provided me.

Dr. Yee had been amazing and there are not enough words to describe how grateful we are for his care of my Father. Dad worked hard his whole life and never really took care of himself. He was too busy taking care of all of us. Shortly after retiring, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was overwhelmed and wanted to give up. When we met Dr.Yee, everything changed. Dr. Yee was so kind to my parents, took time to explain everything, answered every question we had, and was just incredible. My Father and Mother felt secure and confidential enough to go through surgery as a direct result of the time Dr. Yee spent with us. On the day of surgery, Dr. Yee met us in the morning for last minute questions. Four hours later, my Father was out of the operating room and talking to us! His operation was performed using a video camera and tiny incisions. He had no pain and went home in three days. Dr. Yee came every day to see him. We are so thankful to Dr. Yee and all the staff on the 12th floor at VGH.

I met Dr. Yee several years ago at VGH when i had a tension pneumothorax. After a traumatic experience with a chest tube (inserted by another doctor), i was left fearful of ever having another one. In the following months, I was admitted to emergency twice with two smaller pneumothoraces. Each time, the ER doctor wanted to insert a chest tube, but each time I asked that Dr. Yee be consulted first (he kindly gave me his cell number knowing my fear). Thanks be to God that Dr. Yee intervened each time because it turned out that those pneumothoraces healed on their own. It is now over 15 years later and i have not had or needed another chest tube. I am thankful to God for the ways He has used Dr. Yee to bless me and my family.
