After my second pregnancy with Blue Heron, I could not feel more supported and cared for. I was diagnosed with a serious complication and they acted quickly in referring me to Mt. Sinai in Toronto. Although my care had been transferred, my team of midwives continued to follow up regularly and provide the warmest care and support through a very difficult time, often going out of their way to do a quick check up when I was feeling anxious. Just an absolute wonderful team of midwives and I am so thankful I had the pleasure of being in their care.
I had one appointment at this establishment and that was enough. The appointment was carried out by a student, only in the last ten minutes did the midwife attend. I believe her name was Monica, she did not shake my hand or ask a single question about me. Every question I asked was met with attitude and sass. She spoke over the student and was rude at every corner. The tipping point was when I asked if Monica would tell me about herself, qualifications and experience. Her response "I don't understand the question". I then said I have never had a baby before, I would like to know a little about you and your experience. Her response "yeah, I'm not going to do that and don't have time". At this point I felt so disrespected and was in awe at the lack of professionalism. This is no way to treat a client especially a first time mother. Needless to say the appointment did not continue much further. Since then I have spoke to others in the area and it would seem Blue Heron has a reputation. Expectant mothers: you deserve respect from your care provider, please choose wisely.
We had Ann & Michelle as a team. I have to say first that Michelle was wonderful. Unfortunately most of our appointments were with Ann, and Ann was the one on call when I delivered. During my childbearing years I saw various doctors, midwives, OBs, etc and the only one who made me feel horrible about my body, my weight, and my health was Ann. I was in my early thirties with my first and Ann constantly referred to me as being of "advanced maternal age". Literally no one else I dealt with during my pregnancies referred to me that way, just Ann. She was obsessed with my weight, and constantly mentioned the possibility of gestational diabetes and high blood pressure, and my appointments with her constantly stressed me out and left me feeling like I was going to die either during the pregnancy or during delivery. Looking back, I was fine, and I was fine during subsequent pregnancies as well. Unfortunately during my delivery Ann was the one on call and when I delivered in the hospital she talked me into signing over my child's care to her rather than the hospital pediatrician. I was exhausted and mildly delirious and wasn't entirely sure what I was even signing. THEN she continued to show up in my hospital room and at one point did a "hands on" massage type thing on my newborn, with the explanation that she was helping the baby get through residual trauma from the birth. She literally held the baby in her palms and slowly twisted and turned her body and cranked her neck. My baby screamed and cried through the entire thing and I was left crying in my hospital bed. Ann was also horribly pushy with breastfeeding and left me and the baby beyond stressed and struggling. After dealing with Ann I switched to an OB and had wonderful subsequent pregnancies and deliveries.
We had the Ann and Janice team. Ann, although she seems like a "nice person", was super judgey and passive aggressive. It was rotten and stressful dealing with her at a time when we were dealing with a lot of trauma around a difficult pregnancy and post partum complications. We were vulnerable and she was awful. Janice on the other hand was AMAZING. Wow. We were lucky that she was the one on call during our delivery and she really came through for us in every way. She was our delivery room hero! I would give this place 3 stars because of Janice, and no more than that because they have staff like Ann.
Blue Heron Midwives delivered two of my three pregnancies and they were AMAZING!!! My first birth was with an OB and it was the most traumatic experience of my life! Absolutely horrible. My OB was a quack I don't know how she is allowed to practise. The whole Blue Heron team is welcoming and thoughtful and make you feel safe and listen to you. Wonderful wonderful empowering birth experiences with this great team!
Cancer clinic is outstanding. The staff the Doctors and nurses go out of their way to make this difficult time as easy as possible. Yhe radiation clinic operates on time almost to the minute something I have never seen in a medical facility
This rating is for the maternity ward ONLY . The facilities were quite new as of 2009. Very clean and appeared very well organized and equipped. We stayed in the same room to rest where delivery was performed, full bathroom attached - that works great. Very happy with the ward in general; if i were picky i would say only two things: 1.don't have very high hopes for high quality meals after birth, 2.night time staff seemed to be mostly interns (friendly but a little on the green side - ex. was struggling to re-wrap newborn ;) )
