What’s Healthier, Biking or Swimming?

What’s Healthier, Biking or Swimming?

Both can bring great health benefits, but they’re slightly different.

Varying your workout is an important part of all-round fitness. For those who train hard, coaches and athletic advisors will be the first to tell you that always doing one activity can put too much strain on your muscles in one area.

So, how can you toss it up? If you usually go running, why not try something like diving in for a swim or jumping on your bike for a change. Before you do though, you may be wondering (and worrying) whether your cross training workout will help you reap the same aerobic and muscular and benefits as your “regular” one.

First things first: it’s never a bad idea to try something new. If your workout is less intense for a few days, so be it. And do your research, if you must. According to Jae Allen, an hour of vigorous swimming will likely burn fewer calories than the same time biking. And if you’re swimming, you’ll want to consider which stroke you’re doing. The breast stroke burns fewer calories than the front crawl, which in turns burns fewer than the butterfly.

As far as muscle groups go, swimming tends to target your whole body, whereas biking gravitates towards your legs.

In general, both swimming and biking can be of great benefit to your body. It all depends on your approach, and how you go about completing your own workout.
