Try a new dish this Black History Month and be amazed.

February is African American History Month.  As such, it presents a time when individuals and organizations bring to light and celebrate the rich history and seasoned accomplishments of African Americans to date.

There are many ways to dive in and engross yourself in learning about any culture. And one of the most inviting methods is through food. (Whoever said the route to someone’s heart is through their stomach was definitely wise beyond their years).

Where are the best places to try African American food? You may think of traditional ‘Southern Cooking’ when it comes to African American dishes, but in truth, this category ranges much wider.

African American cooking can also include Caribbean flavors. It incorporates African dishes, (which can vary widely in and of themselves), and South American cooking, as well.

In order to find the best restaurant, (if it isn’t already in your own kitchen), there’s help out there. The OldWays website has compiled a list of African Heritage restaurants across the United States. It has them listed according to city and state, and provides the type of cuisine and restaurant name, with a link to the establishment’s website, if they have one.

February is the perfect time to toss off the winter blues and head out for a meal with family or friends.
