There’s a Gene That Causes Infertility

It was discovered in Japan and may lead to a host of new horizons in reproductive medicine.

You or someone you know has tried to conceive for a long time. But it hasn’t been possible. Nothing seems to work, and you’ve blamed yourself and been riddled with unanswered questions. Is it your diet? Are you exercising too much (or too little?) Maybe you need more fruits and veggies?

It’s possible that those elements could come into play when trying to create a baby, but it could be something else: your genetics.

Researchers from Kumamoto University in Japan have discovered a gene called “Meiosin”. It’s important because it behaves like a switch. When it’s turned on, you can procreate, (if all else is well), but when it’s inactivated or inhibited, it causes infertility.

This happens because the Meiosin gene is said to behave like a “control tower” that’s linked to turning on hundreds of other dormant genes that “wake up” when you’re successfully making a baby.

Knowing this, what can you do about it? Unfortunately, right now, not much.

Researchers are hopeful, however, that the discovery will open many new doors in the future. When it comes to reproductive medicine, new techniques for helping parents conceive could be implemented for success.
