Ladies, Is Your Hairstyle Causing Hair Loss? Researchers at Johns Hopkins Say, Yes

Tight styles could be ruining your look.

Hair loss is commonly thought of as a man’s problem, but women wrestle with it as well.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, an estimated 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss in their lifetime.

Alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, can be caused by many things, but one of the most surprising could be the way you wear your hair. It’s true that your genetics and any stressful life events you undergo can cause your hair to fall out.

But researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have found a strong link in particular, between increased hair loss in women and hairstyles that pull at your scalp.

Like pony tails and corn rows? They could be risky.

Hair loss happens when there’s prolonged or repeated tension exerted on the root of the hair follicle.

“Hair is a cornerstone of self-esteem and identity for many people,” commented Crystal Aguh, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, “but ironically, some hairstyles meant to improve our self-confidence actually lead to hair and scalp damage.”

Thankfully, FPHL can be prevented and with early intervention can even be halted and reversed.

If you regularly apply heat and hair-altering chemicals, you could also be putting yourself at risk.

The solution? Let it all hang out and go with an afro– you get to keep it all, and it could be your best look yet.
