A Michigan man’s death has been identified as a cause of the unknown bacteria that broke out in Wisconsin in November.
According to The Detroit News, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed the link to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Service on March 11.
The bacteria, Elizabethkingia, has killed 17 people in Wisconsin since November. The infection typically attacks victims over the age of 65, and everyone who’s died had at least one other health complication.
Elizabethkingia is a type of bacteria that is difficut to treat with antibiotics and is usually resistant to them, with common symptoms including fever, shortness of breath and chills. The bacteria is named after a CDC scientist who discovered the local-environment infection, Elizabeth O. King.
The Michigan death hasn’t been proven to be directly related to the specific outbreak in Wisconsin as of yet.
