It’s a coffee whose brand name couldn’t be more fitting.

An Adelaide café, Vicious Coffee, has been serving up The Asskicker – the strongest iced coffee in Australia. It’s so outrageously potent, that the barista checks you over for heart issues or high blood pressure before they serve you.

This behemoth brew is for the caffeine diehard; the largest size holds four shots of espresso, four 48-hour-brewed cold-drip ice cubes, 120 ml of 10-day-brewed cold drip, with another four more cold-drip ice-cubes. Don’t worry, they add some steam milk to take some of that edge off (we use the term ‘some’ extremely loosely).

The $16 price tag is high, but café owner Steve Benington says it isn’t a coffee to be chugged on the way to work. It’s a coffee to be enjoyed over the span of a day or two.

“The idea came about from a regular customer, a nurse from the local hospital who was called in for an emergency night shift and needed something to stay alert,” Benington said to Broadsheet in an interview.

“It took her two days to finish the drink, and it kept her up for three.”

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand states 210mg per day – which equates to three cups of instant Joe – can potentially lead to elevated anxiety levels in adults. The Asskicker concoction contains 25 times more caffeine than that.

Benington admits he closely assesses anyone looking for an Asskicker; he currently sells about two or three per week.

“For a first timer, I try and talk them out of it, and if I’m able to, then they’re not ready for it,” he says.
