Having been asked, I will tell you. I met Dr. Kim exactly three times, about 5-7 minutes each time. He had no medical records of mine, other than the three test results that oncology runs twice a year. If this doctor had any wits about him, he would wonder why so much follow-up screening was still being done. If he had my records, he would know that I was born with CP. What he never knew is that the entire left side of my body operates at 30% less than the right. And that ever since the bracing, splinting, posture and gait training and daily rehab since age 2, the right side has accommodated for the deficit on the left. So, when dosed with 2300mg/day of gabapentin, I suffered all L large muscle groups failure with no prior warning.
I was diagnosed in Nov 2009 with noninfiltrating intraductal carcinoma in situ with metastasis to 29 of 31 taken lymph nodes, R axilla, R sub-clavicular, R shoulder, R flank. I struggled to know all aspects of lymphedema, beginning the morning after surgery. I am confident that after over 12 years of controlling this and with many many bouts with cellulitis, I know more than Dr. Kim will ever know about lymphedema....and to suggest I would be a candidate for opiate injections in the R shoulder, borders on ignorance.
But with all of that, I was referred to him by the Chief of Cardiology for the Community Hospitals system, Dr. Condi. It seems that the beta blocker I've been on since my 20s, is somewhat helpful..diastolic and systolic are within normal limits. But my pulse is higher than it should be. The cardiac ultrasound went well. His comment: I have a great heart! He will not consider raising my metoprolol, and suggested I control the pain. BUT DR. KIM NEVER LISTENED.
He is unaware I have over 30 years working in medicine, running the desk in ICU, CCU, OR (pre-, peri- and post-op), ER, Trauma and Lifeflight. I've taught medicine at post-secondary level, kept physician credentialing compliant in a 300-bed hospital, and was responsible for all transcription going to a 500-bed hospital just south of Chicago. I've even assembled an IMC pneumonia protocol as well as a pain protocol for the anesthesiologists.
Dr. Kim should begin by doing his due diligence about who he is about to treat, and make the effort to be more communicative with his prospective patients. Because one of these times, his arrogance and self-importance will get in the way of someone with just a little bit more relevant history...and knows her body habitus better than he. And knows more than he.
