We can't say enough about Dr. Semelago and the caring, compassionate skill he brings to his profession! My husband had already had a bypass scheduled when a third heart attack made his situation dire. He was flown to Hamilton from Windsor, and Dr. Semelago performed a quintuple bypass three hours later. Thanks to him, I'll have my husband around for many years to come. I will be grateful to him for every one of them.

Dr. Semelagho was fantastic. Performed quadruple bypass on me in January 2019 and gave me a new lease on life. Explained everything in clear terms and even got me in a new diet after surgery to lose weight. I can’t thank him enough for what he has done for me. I have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Semelagho, thank you so much.

I want to thank Dr. L.Semelhago for all he did to help my 90 year old father and our family get through a very sudden and traumatic time in his life. His care, compassion, knowledge and ability to put us at ease were not only professional but comforting. He also made my father understand his surgery (quadruple by-pass) and what his recovery time would be and what to expect. He also confirmed things that we had told our father so that our suggestions and directions were taken seriously, not just us telling him what to do. From my whole family and my fathers friends we thank you and would recommend to anyone that is worried or afraid of heart surgery to be referred to you without hesitation knowing they would receive the best of care.

I had to travel to Hamilton for aortic valve replacement surgery to be done by Dr. Semelagho. Our first preop visit with him allayed many of our fears and concerns. We were in the dark away from home and familiarity. His expertise was evident at every meeting with him.
My complaint was the hospital post op care. I felt it did not a match his expertise from the fried chicken I had for dinner 24 hours post op to very few competent nursing visits to physio that left me feeling berated. A dirty shower stall in my room wasn’t cleaned until the day of my discharge. I could hardly wait to be discharged. My lack in confidence in the hospital care did not match his knowledge and expertise. The unit requires ...in my opinion... a rating system like this for patients to be able to assess their care. That data would be beneficial for unit growth. Specialized and busy needs to have top notch nursing. I felt the bedside care only adequate.

Some patients will want to know as much as possible before electing to have their cardiac surgery. Other patients will want to know as little as possible. I belong to the first category. I had many questions and I required detailed explanations about the proposed bypass surgery and the possible outcomes, whether positive or negative. Needless to say, I wanted to feel confidence in the surgeon who was to perform the operation, but I also very much wanted to feel some personal or human connection with the surgeon.

The surgeon assigned to my case was Dr. Lloyd Semelhago. I was unfamiliar with his name and reputation prior to the surgery. He introduced himself to me and my wife shortly after my heart catherization. We deluged him with questions and he responded with patience, thoroughness and honesty. We were both impressed with his confidence that the surgery was the most reasonable thing to do and that the outcome would be positive in my particular case. Above all, I experienced that personal connection that I was seeking. I needed to feel that I was being treated as an individual human being and not just as another routine patient for surgery.

Patient. Passionate. Personal. Thorough. Thoughtful. Committed.

Throughout the process Dr. Semelhago kept emphasizing the importance of the cooperative relationship between the surgeon and patient. Namely, the surgeon would do his job but the patient also had to do his/her job. During the pre-operative period the patient must have confidence in the surgeon, trust him and believe in a positive outcome to the surgery. That trust and positive attitude should continue into the post-operative period in which the patient must play a very active role, physically and mentally, in his/her recovery.

Dr. Semelhago was passionate and explicit about the patient’s responsibility to follow a dedicated regime for physical exercise, diet and mental attitude. This was a mantra that he repeated over and over again. And it was a mantra that I repeated to myself during my recovery period and one which encouraged me to fulfill my responsibilities during that time.

Thank you, Dr. Semelhago, from the bottom of my heart.
