I'm usually not one to review medical professionals, but I feel I have to, even if only to reassure future patients. Me: Gen Y, high risk breast program for 15 years

FIRST CONSULT

My first consult was a few years before my surgery. The visit took well over an hour, it wasn't rushed, it was informative and I left with a plethora of additional reading and online content that Dr. Musgrave suggested

DECISION TO SURGERY

After a stressful and drawn out biopsy scenario, I decided I'd move forward with a double preventative mastectomy (with immediate reconstruction) and reached out. In spite of being in the middle of covid, Dr. M was responsive, kept me up to date on the provincial guidelines to surgery times and as soon as it was possible, I met with her once again to go over the consent. During this consult, there was once again a very fair time allocation for questions (even those repetitive once). There was no holding back on the risks associated with the procedure - both acute and long term.

SURGERY

The day of my surgery I met with Dr. Musgrave at the registration, where all markings to my breast happened. They were meticulous and she took her time. What struck me most was the respect of nursing staff, who repeatedly told me (from pre-op to discharge) that Dr. M is one of the few doctors who deeply cares, is very concerned about outcomes and is known 'to take her time to make it perfect'.

AFTER

I'm a rather anxious person - and have reached out to Dr. M multiple times since my surgery (4 days post). Each and every time, she explains, supports her rational and reassures that I can call back for anything and everything.

So in short, if you're assigned Dr. M for your surgery, please feel that you are in great hands and take the (second hand, decade old) reviews below with a grain of salt. She is an incredible doctor and a patient advocate and I feel in great hands.

I had a very positive experience with Dr Musgrave. She performed my breast reduction and did an excellent job. My scars are healing well and are minimally noticeable. I look and feel so much better. COVID and OHIP caused delays and that was very frustrating but everything eventually worked out. I found her to be professional and pleasant to deal with. She may rush through things a bit, but never to the point where I couldn’t ask questions (which she always answered and even drew pictures to help explain.) I didn’t want Dr Musgrave to be my friend, I wanted her to be a skilled surgeon, and she was. I would recommend her to anyone.

UPDATE: so the saga continues. I started my previous post below with “After 4 months I was finally able to get the first consultation…”. Just back here to update with the latest. So granted we are still in a pandemic, I can understand a delay. That said, out of nowhere I get a voicemail from Dr Musgrave herself around Aug 7 stating that my OHIP coverage has been approved and they can schedule me for surgery. Now keep in mind, I hadn’t heard a peep from her office in roughly 3 YEARS!!!!! So I return her call, and she tells me with no explanation that the coverage expires in 10 days so “can I come in next week” to get the breast reduction. What the F!!! I tell her that obviously this is coming out of left field, so she says that she will have her office apply to OHIP for an extension of coverage, and that it shouldn’t be an issue. (In my mind at this time, I’m really on the fence about even moving forward with her). She asks when would be ideal for me to have the procedure, and I respond with end of October. She says okay we should hear back from OHIP in the next couple weeks and that she will call me back in 2-3 weeks to move forward.
Big surprise, no call from her, no update. Pretty sure if I do hear from her again it will be in 2024. AVOID THIS HOT MESS OF A SURGEON.

Musgrave did my tramflap surgery after a double mastectomy in 2010 - I still have open wounds on my stomach that my wound care specialist said will never heal completely and my breast mounds became horribly infected from being on VAC machines for too long. As a result of her poor care I have horribly deformed breast mounds. Never did end up with breasts. She isn't even a talented hack - she is a dismal failure in every way.

Got Top Surgery with her. I will need a revision but I cannot tell you whether it is caused from a lack of skills. I did not mind her personality. If you want someone to hold your hand and give you emotional support she may not be for you, but for me who likes it to be all business I was fine.
I actually have more difficulty with her receptionist in scheduling my actual surgery.

DO NOT trust this person with your life and health needs. I was suffering a fracture and her and her staff kept me in the dark regarding my treatment options and outcomes. For weeks I thought i would be getting surgery to fix my fracture, however her and her staffs remedy was: “THERAPY SORRY WE CANT FIX YOUR FRACTURE IT WILL BE DEFORMED, YOUR 4 WEEKS HAS PASSED FOR SURGERY”. She didn’t even come in to check my fracture, she would just pop in time to time, and not even fully look at it thoroughly. Definitely will be getting a second opinion. TF has canadian health care become....

Dr. Musgrave is very talented and amazing at what she does. She puts extra care into her work and I felt like she tried to understand me as I’m a very nervous patient. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on my left breast when I was 28, and had a few lumpectomies, a mastectomy and reconstruction done over the last few years. I’ve been very pleased with the results of my breast surgeries with her as my plastic surgeon. Dr. George, Dr. Musgrave and Dr. Lin are my surgical dream team as I’ve had them as my surgeons and Dr. Lin as my anaesthesiologist twice, and I know that I’ll always be okay in their hands. She is also very approachable and fun to speak with as we bonded over our shared love of a tv show as well after one of my appointments. Also, whenever I call her line for questions or appointments, her staff is always quick to get back to me and provide me with answers and information quickly. She also makes sure I’m well informed going into each procedure and how to properly care for my wound during recovery. So grateful to have her as my plastic surgeon!
