Total lack of compassion - told me I do not have to see him again after I refused chemotherapy after my surgery. Refused to refer me for radiation treatment.

My first and only meeting with dr chi’s was unfortunately not a pleasant one.
I entered the e appointment feeling full of fear and anxiety as to what’s next and very concerned about taking a drug for the next 5 years of my life.
Dr chia breezed in and rushed through the protocol and is then visibly annoyed with any of my questions and concerns.. one of which was can I take this during radiation. He said it was fine where as I had two other cancer patients tell me that their oncologist told them not to, and to also wait until two weeks after treatment before taking the drug. I thankfully followed their advice instead and was glad I did after knowing the effects of radiation and this drug. His final words were a “are you going to take it or not..” and then breezes out when I can’t muster up an answer leaving me to follow up with his nurse, who was lovely.
The whole experience left me feeling more like I was meeting with a commission salesperson as opposed to all of the other caring , patient conscientious people I have dealt with before and after my appt with him at BC cancer.
With that said, I’d like to thank Dr Mariano for making space for me at my last visit., She greeted me with warmth, and patience and took the time to answer everyone of my questions in a very detailed and honest manor. 🙏🏻

I have been a patient of Stephen’s for years now. Why? Because he knows what he’s doing and I’m still alive! I love his straight forward talks, our honest and frank discussions. I feel like he truly cares and wants me to live a quality life. I feel confident when I leave my appointments that I’ve been heard, we have a plan and will roll with that plan until it stops working and we try again. Anyone who has Dr Chia as their Onc is lucky.

I have been a patient of Dr. Chia for 9 years. I couldn't have asked for a better oncologist. I actually chose him as my oncologist after I read up on all of the different oncologists working in Vancouver. I am so glad that I was able to get my request. He is very busy, so I cannot blame him not spending a lot of time with me or if he has fellow drs or interns seeing me first before he checks in. He is always kind and patient. He answers all of my questions and seems to be very thorough. For those who give Dr. Chia a low rating, it sounds like they are the kind of patients who don't want to listen to his advice or expertise. I am someone who doesn't have a medical background, so I obviously will listen to him, being the expert in his field. He has taken very good care of me through these years and I am cancer free because of him.

I was lucky enought to have Dr. Chia as my oncologist for breast cancer. He was extremely knowledgeable in the many forms of cancer and treatments available, as well as compassionate to the effects various treatments would have. I thank him for his kindness and professionalism.

This Doctor’s complete lack of compassion, empathy and kindness as well as his complete unwillingness to answer my questions or address my concerns meant that my first visit with him was also my last. He was rude, abrupt and clearly had no interest in having a discussion. He wanted to tell me what was going to happen and get out of the examing room as fast as possible. We left his office feeling far worse that we did going in. Whatever happened to “First do no harm”?

Dr. Chia is an excellent medical oncologist, full of knowledge, expertise, and experience. He is dedicated and committed to treating his patients and saving their lives, and advancing cancer care, as shown through his curiosity and interest in the research that he does. I feel that he gives me individualized treatment based on my pathology and information he's got, and that he does his best to help to treat my cancer, even though it doesn't always come across in his communications (cancer is a disease that make people cringe and avoid the topic let's face it). He might not appear warm and fuzzy, but he is empathetic, and when you are dealing with a life threatening illness like cancer you would want a doctor who is smart, experienced, curious and interested in cancer care and your care, somebody who does his best to help you. You'd want an expert in the field. Dr. Chia is a great fit! And I would see a counsellor for psychosocial and emotional healing, which she is good at and trained to do.

Dr Chia has been my oncologist for over 2 years. I feel I am in very good hands under his care. His is extremely knowledgeable and I do find him very easy to talk to. He answers my questions easily. He also attracts really great Fellows to work with him. I have enjoyed working with these professionals. I really admire Dr. Chia

Dr. Chia has been my oncologist for almost 2 years now, and I think he is amazing. He is personable, gentle, thorough, and always answers all my questions with compassion and facts. I find him warm and available…so appreciate he is my medical oncologist on my breast cancer journey. Although I am a 'simple' case with a stage 1 early catch, I do not feel that he takes me or my case any less seriously than far more complex and tragic cases that I am sure he deals with. A grateful cancer patient…
