An experience that began well and ended in deep trauma due to Elodies lack of proper attention to concern, abrasive attitude, over-pride in philosophical theory instead of listening, and telling us we were not in labour when we were. Our experience with Elodie began well but ended with her being reported to the midwifery authorities and her eventually leaving the nation and, I hear, to everybody’s relief, midwifery. I’m putting this out there in case she is still practising. It is important to know that while it’s so great to have “alternative minds” that are advocating for natural birth, to ignore the instincts and worries of the parents in question in order to serve those ideals and theories: fail. Our birth ended in a very difficult emergency because we were obliged to leave to the center and then hospital without her, and look for a different midwife mid-labour, as she told us we were not in “real labour” , because contractions were about 5-8 seconds shorter than her “technical definition” despite the mother clearly saying this was happening. Her dominant attitude created genuine problems and conflict with the husband as well as the mother of the labouring mother to be, as she listened to no one. She was erratic in her decisions and changed her mind last minute, saying that “she could come over now” when it was in fact too late.
I trust she has worked deeply on her communication abilities and priorities since that experience, however as some of the issues could be deep rooted I would not recommend her in this role, that requires softness, good listening, and prioritising care of humans over care of theory. Perhaps in other roles or a a different sector she can excel, and channel herself effectively. We have had support from the wider community agreeing that she failed to serve us or midwifery properly, she received formal reprimand, and moved on from the city. We live with the impact of her distrust and failure to be reliable or show up that when we called her and needed her. The disappointment was sharp because we had gotten along fairly well with her in earlier appointments, she had supported us to travel and continue to be adventurous and active during the pregnancy, and we included her warmly in our community. Therefore, we sincerely hope she has changed her career path. We write this report to add to the warning flags of overbearingness/lack of empathy that any mother considering her in this role may already be seeing.
