Misdiagnosed me...spent 4 years of my life thinking I had something serious until two other doctors told me everything is fine. Never go to him, don't put yourself through what I had been through.

At first i read the reviews on this website and became skeptical of trying out Dr. Van der Merwe as my new family doctor. But because I had a number of trial and errors trying to find my new family doc, I thought I would give it a try. I believe everyone deserves a chance and I took the risk and did my first meet and greet with him. He was an absolute pleasure to be around and decided to stick with him. Since then he has been nothing but kind and understanding and I am so happy to finally find my new family doctor. Bottom line... he is great!!!!I would 100% recommend. I couldn't be happier :)

He may have a demeanour that is a little less warm than Dr. Mentz - whom he shares the practice with - but he cares about the well being of his patients, and he cares about his profession. He regular attends workshops to learn more about his profession, he asks questions and has genuine discussions with you about pros and cons, and he is not afraid to tell you if he disagrees - which he has a right to do given he has more knowledge. Who is the doctor? Not me. Him. Dr. Mentz is wonderful as well and has been my doctor since I was a child, I see Dr. Van Der Merwe when she is busy. Dr. Mentz is more sweet when she speaks, she smiles a lot, and she is very empathetic in her communication, and she won’t straight up tell you she disagrees - she will give her opinion but she respects your right to research and partially guide your own healthcare. But they should not be compared. They both are wonderful doctors, and people who care a lot about helping people. And to the comment that mentioned he was racist? That couldn’t be more of a far-fetched lie. I’m a black woman and as I said Dr. Mentz has been my doctor over 10 years, and nor her or Dr. Van Der Merwe have never demonstrated behaviour verbally or non-verbally that even resembled racism nor ignorance in the slightest - they are also both South African...yes white African, but not ignorant and not racist. We need more doctors who care the same way they do.

Short: He's not good. Very cold, not personable in the slightest and comes off very arrogant and derogatory. If you're looking for a doctor who cares, go elsewhere. Not a good replacement for those who saw Dr. Mentz. There is more to being a doctor than just medical knowledge, the root of medicine is helping people (especially in family medicine) amd that is something that I beleive he does not understand. Will not be returning.

Dr. Van Dear Merwe has been my doctor for a few years, he did my immigration physical and I then went to him as a family doctor, he's always been fantastic. Every concern I have he takes seriously and when I have a concern he can't address he's always quick to tell me where I can get the help I need. When I needed to get help for my depression and anxiety I was nervous because I've heard horror stories about other doctors but he took it seriously and got me the help I needed. His staff has always been really kind.

He's a very quiet guy but he's always been really nice to me and I feel like he genuinely cares about my concerns and listens.

I needed to get a immigration physical so I came here and had the pleasure (sarcasm) of seeing Dr. Johann. He is super cold and barely made eye contact. I can get past the having no bedside manner since he's not my primary doctor, but hes racist! I often let racist comments go also but you are a doctor, if you don't like people, change your profession. He's the worst.

As for as the reception one of them was super sweet! While the other one acted like she ran the place, humble yourself. Super arrogant, looked and talked like she couldn't be bothered by helping you. Annoying!!

I saw Dr. Van der Merwe for nearly 2 years. He was very knowledgeable but has no compassion for anyone.
