Horrible experience. Do not go to her. She won’t listen to you and she will make you feel awful. Terrible therapist.

Do yourself a favor, DO NOT go to Anne Fiona Malave. Extremely mean, judgemental, rude, unhelpful and extremely unpleasant. She will make you feel awful like it was the point of the session. She must have erased the tons of horrible reviews she received from before, but she can't hide the truth that she is an absolutely terrible mental health therapist.

I had an awful experience with Dr. Mulave. So bad in fact that I immediately made an appointment with a different therapist to get over the shock of how negative my experience with Mulave was! She was so warm over the phone but in person just so clinical and cold. Just rapid-fired questions at me and made snap judgments about my answers without bothering to understand where I was coming from. Being blunt is one thing but she was downright rude and insulting. I felt absolutely horrible leaving her office.

I went to see Dr. Mulave several months ago and I still cannot get over how absolutely terrible the session was. She seemed so sympathetic over the phone (although, I probably should have been wary of how she was able to answer immediately every time... shouldn't she be in session sometimes?) In person her attitude seemed to be the very opposite. She jumped to conclusions regarding my story without letting me fully explain myself and left me feeling confused, judged and far worse off than I was when I walked through her door. I cried all the way home (and not in a cathartic way) I am shocked to find that there is even one positive review of her online. I have my doubts as to the veracity of them, to be honest.
Several people I spoke to about this experience believe that she might be the type to try and convince her patients of how much they need her. Whatever it is there is something really insidious happening here...

One of the worst therapists I’ve ever seen and I’ve had a lot of awful ones. She was mean, cold, and blamed me for all the problems in my abusive relationship. She would insert herself into issues that were not part of the therapy and make nasty comments to me. I don’t know how this woman still has a license.

I met with Dr. Malave once. It was not a positive experience. We had spoken on the phone prior to our meeting. During that initial conversation I was emotional and clearly not in a good place. My fertility journey spans 15 years. I was looking for guidance and support in making some difficult choices. I thought with her vast experience and knowledge Dr. Malave would be the person to help me. I was wrong. I left the office in tears and sobbed the 45 minute drive home. It may be the delivery or the blunt approach. It may also be the lack of empathy or the inability to read where a patient is emotionally. Whatever it is and does it really matter when damage has been done?

In the past year we have been seeing Dr Malave, she has helped my husband and I make great strides in our marriage. She does not mince words, which might be perceived as harsh. However she is effective. She pushes us to explore areas would rather not go, out of our comfort zone, and that is when we make real progress. If you are looking to make actual changes in your life I would recommend Dr. Malave.

Dr. Malave is empathetic and knowledgeable about matters regarding fertility. I’ve been seeing her for a month now and her style is definitely direct, however, I prefer a direct style any day to one who beats around the bush. She will challenge you and push you to realizations in your sessions that will help you evolve and better yourself. If you prefer direct and honest counseling, I highly recommend her.

In the 14 months I have been seeing Dr. Malave, I have found her to be both empathetic and tough. I appreciate that sessions can take the form of a respectful debate, with her challenging my positions, not out of skepticism, but out of a sincere desire to help me hone in on my exact feelings/anxieties/emotions and their non-obvious sources. I am somebody who likes to be challenged, so her style has really suited my treatment needs well.

I went to see Dr. Malave for one session and it was not a good experience. She was cold and formal which I didn’t mind at first but then when I tried to explain why I came to see her she seemed to jump to conclusions without trying to really understand and definitely made assumptions about me. She was extremely blunt which I found surprising for a first session - what could she know about me to have such strong opinions? And hurtful ones at that?
She showed zero compassion and I left feeling extremely judged and frustrated.
Then I came home and searched for information on her that was NOT self-written and I’ve found so many bad reviews. I really wish I had seen those before I spent the money on this appointment.

Biography

I am a clinical psychologist-psychoanalyst, fertility counselor, and adoption therapist in private practice with offices in New York City (Columbus Circle, Midtown North, 10019) and Millerton, NY (Upper Dutchess County, 12546). My main focus is on providing psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and small groups. I treat adults, elders, and adolescents. I work in both short-term and long-term, intensive treatments. My treatment orientation is interpersonal/relational with a pragmatic and practical clinical approach. I put an emphasis on the importance of relationships, and of helping people improve the quality of significant relationships that may be negatively affected by, or contributing to the person’s emotional difficulties. I work with general issues that trouble people, like anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, relationship difficulties, and developmental transitions. In all my work I aim to conceptualize people’s lives in terms of both the typical and common experiences associated with their particular problem as well as the unique features related to their own specific life experience. I seek to find a way for people to recognize and build on strengths, expand coping methods, and reach towards personal growth and the promotion of resilience. I stay active in my professional communities and am involved in various committees working alongside colleagues. I also teach and supervise mental health professionals. These additional professional commitments help me stay relevant, up to date, and fresh in my clinical work. I continue to grow as a therapist and I am continually engaging in educational experiences and attending conferences with that purpose in mind As an immigrant who has lived in different cultures (born and raised in England, I have lived in New York since 1976) I have a particular interest in cultural complexity, as well as in differences of all kinds.
