This doctor did my cataract surgery! On my right eye the surgery went well and he was fine. This past week I just had my second surgery the left side done. I was laying still and trying to concentrate on what I was supposed to be looking at and all of a sudden He yelled at me stop moving .! I apologize but I could not tell I moved . He yelled again and I told him I was sorry but I couldn’t tell I was moving. He yelled saying stop apologizing just do it . !! The nurse told him my right eye was twitching but I really could not control! He yelled again stop doing that. After the surgery and he left the OR . I burst into tears . The nurses told me I did good and that some times those twitches start when your nervous. I would never let him touch me again or any one in my family. I understand that it’s very important to hold still during eye surgery, but they could have stopped for a minute and taped the other eye such because I really didn’t feel it ! He acted like I was doing it on purpose!!

At the end of my visit, with no discussion with Doctor Navin Tekwani about what just happened, the scheduling person informed me I needed to schedule for cataract operations to replace both of my lenses with different types of replacement lenses and the doctor had decided that with no explanation or discussion of why they were different or why he decided on those two types of replacement lenses or why the up-charges were recommended. My first comment was can I do just the bad eye? And their curt answer was more or less "well the doctor says this is what you should get so its what you should do” I felt like they were offended that I dared to question the doctors’s decision. I wasn’t… I just wanted insight or an explanation and a chance for input or discussion. My gut feeling at that moment was clear…before proceeding, I needed to research for another doctor despite the highest ratings by what seemed like everyone including my Primary Physician, a major national magazine and many people I have consulted with as well as many internet rating sites. Based on the stellar reviews, I suppose he is one of the best eye surgeons in the state and in the country but the total lack of discussion of a very intimate decision, the lack of respect for my time in the waiting room and the rude personalities of some of the office staff were a red flag for me personally. That was very different from what I found on the ratings sites so I felt the need to share this.
It all started the year prior when I made my first appointment with Dr Navin Tekwani. After waiting for over 2 hours in crowded waiting room, I was very surprised to find out my appointment was with another doctor. I decided to roll with it and give him a chance. I opted to have the extra fee scan that insurance does not pay for and He took a look at my eye that had an advanced cataract (i was still able to function daily without glasses) and said I have a problem that could cause serious complications and I would need to make an appointment to have a laser surgery procedure to avoid the possibility of that complication if they dilate my eye for the scan. So no exam or eye test at either visit but insurance was charged for full visit. I told them I couldn't wait and would call to make the appointment later and left. I researched the doctor and he was just about year out of medical school at that time. I got a second opinion where I paid out of pocket to get extensive scans and a full evaluation at another eye surgeon and they did not see the same risk, but felt that I would be a candidate to have the cataract removed. Ironically, after much research, it seemed as though Dr. Navin Tekwani had the most outstanding ratings. So I decided to make sure my next annual appointment would be with Dr. Tekwani himself. Once again the wait was 2 hours but neither the tech or the doctor said anything about the laser procedure being needed. They asked me to use my 5 year old glasses to read the eye chart and gave up. Then sent me to a waiting room where Dr. Tekwani eventually arrived and tested for pressure and examined my eyes then sent me to get dialated and to get some scans. Then I was sent to another waiting area. After about 30 minutes wait I decided to leave and as I was exiting they stopped me to make the appointment for surgery that I outlined above.

I arranged for cataract surgery with Tekwani, as they're an in network provider for my insurance. They booked my surgery at an outpatient surgery center, rather than an in network hospital, that used a third party anesthesiologist.

After *much* digging, I was able to determine that the the surgery center and anesthesiologist were out of network. I got vague assurances that they would negotiate with my insurance, write off most of the difference, and only stick me with a small amount.

But that's not how it works. I'd have to sign a guarantee of payment and I'd be responsible for whatever they couldn't collect from my insurance. In fact, anesthesiologists are the primary source of "surprise billing," precisely because of this scam. They intentionally don't sign up as in network providers so they can bill patients whatever they like.

I canceled my surgery with Tekwani and made arrangements with Barnes Jewish, as their resources are fully in network. I don't know if Tekwani gets a kickback for this arrangement, but it doesn't matter. It's unethical to put patients in this position, and not disclose it without serious digging, whether they benefit financially or not. I will never go to nor recommend Tekwani.
