I had the Darrach Procedure performed by Dr. Osterman in 2003, and I still thank God that I had such a wonderful surgeon who gave me my life back. Thanks to him, I was able to go back to work as a legal secretary and do everything I did before the car accident that snapped my wrist in two. The wait time in the office was horrible, I remember that. But it was worth it to get 100 percent fixed up. Dr. Osterman is the best!

One of my thumbs was smaller than the other, and was cracking (like when you crack your knuckles). I was pretty young at the time. He said I had a growth plate problem in my thumb, and a surgery to lengthen the thumb could fix the size difference. I asked him what the surgery would do; he said it would make it look like the other thumb. I asked him if it would fix the cracking; he said maybe. I asked him why I would risk the surgery; he said to make them cosmetically equal. Why he would suggest cosmetic surgery on a child I still do not understand. Only years later did I find out that he was completely wrong about my thumb, and it wasn't a growth plate problem at all. It's a genetic difference called a clubbed thumb. There's absolutely nothing wrong with my thumb. Had I had surgery, who knows how horribly that would have gone.

I had a bone cancer in my arm in 1983 at the age of 13 and was told two years later that I would need to hve my arm amputated. I was referred to Dr. Osterman and have been seeing him since 1986.He has enabled me to keep my arm by doing cutting edge surgeries that NO physicians in my immediate area have even heard of. Yes, the wait time in his offoce is quite long, but I feel priveledge to be able to have such a physician take part in my care. Because of this man I was able to fulfill my goal of becoming a nurse and able to do hands-on patient care. I would recommend ths physician to anyone. I travel 2 1/2 hours to his ofice, often wait up to four hours to see him and then travel another 2 1/2 hours home. The wait is ABSOLUTELY worth it !!!!

Get a 2nd Opinion: Quick to recommend surgery. Awhile ago I had a pinched nerve which disabled my arm for a week. He recommended corrective surgery right off the bat, after some sort of electric test on my nerves. I got a second opinion-- new doc said wait a month and only get surgery if it doesn't go away. Sure enough, problem went away and never returned. EXTREMELY thankful I didn't get unnecessary surgery. No idea if he's a great surgeon, he might be, but I don't personally trust doctors that are quick to recommend futher treatment if it may not be required.

Although the wait time both for an appointment and in office is horrendous, you can't find anyone better. Honest and upfront about prognosis and treatment. Been seeing him for 10 years and wouldn't change a thing
