The smell was horrible and overwhelming as I waited 40 minutes on a gurney near the 3rd floor nurses station to be admitted to my room. One of my ambulance drivers actually doubled-over at one point, the smell was so bad. As they finally pushed me around the corner, the smells got much worse; then I saw that the odors were coming from another gurney parked in the main hallway. It was a terrible mess, covered with blood, urine, excrement, I don't know what else. Then my room reeked of chlorine; apparently that 40 minute wait was to allow the aid time to clean the room. My eyes burned, the bleach was so strong in the air. Then I noticed a brown swipe across the television screen. I saw something similar on the bed rail in two places. It probably wasn't fecal matter, but that's what it looked like. Then I noticed brown crud on the controls for the bed and TV. I was in a very vulnerable condition and this was supposed to be a super clean isolation room. OMG! I told the nursing supervisor that I wanted to be transferred to another hospital, somewhere safe. The next morning it all hit the fan. Dr. Mathews grew red in the face when I told him what had happened and that my main goal now was to transfer to somewhere safe. His first response was to say, "Well, I have a contract." He then orchestrated an effort to keep me there against my will, at the same time creating documentation to demonstrate my delirium (so that I didn't really experience those deplorable conditions). They claimed that I was "confused" and uncooperative and unable to make decisions. If you've seen a movie called "Shutter Island," with Leonardo DiCaprio, that's what was happening to me. Some employees behaved honorably, others were solicited to help in creating and documenting my "delirium." I was supposed to see my case manager 3 times daily; they call her my "angel." I think that she refused to be part of their plan, because I didn't see her again after my first morning there. After a week of anxiety and insomnia, I was at the end of my rope. I didn't realize that they could do this to people...not in a hospital! I had to call a friend, an RN, to come rescue me...and it wasn't easy. Dr. Mathews did this to me. I could not move from my bed, I had no family or friends visiting me, he had all the power and he was determined to cover this up to save his contract and reputation. I don't know about the rest of Kindred, but the third floor in Seattle has a lot of really sick people...and they're wearing white jackets.
