I have always loved this hospital. I was born with complex congenital heart disease. About eight years ago I was misdiagnosed as having a pulmonary embolism. The first thing the docs in my home town did right was send me here. If it hadn't been for the cardiologists and radiologists I met here, I would not be writing this today. Since that time I have transferred all my care here. Granted some parts of the building are less than stellar, but from my perspective Barnes-Jewish has the one thing that counts the most, competent physicians.

This hospital it a TEACHING hospital, first and foremost. Two members of our family had outpatient surgery here. Nurses were overworked and inattentive, the facilities seemed run down and dirty. One family member's surgeon passed the family member off to a resident, despite previously assuring her the private physician would be doing the surgery/follow up etc. The emphasis here is on teaching. Patient care and comfort are not a consideration at all. You are there to serve their needs and provide cases for learners, nothing more. We had zero autonomy and found the entire environment to be disorganized and unprofessional. 2 anesthesiology residents had a verbal altercation in front of us. I was shocked. None of my doctors listened to me at all and as a result I was discharged too soon and wound up back in the ER with a long list of problems post surgery. I would never voluntarily set foot in this hospital again for any reason at all.
