You Should Clean and Disinfect These Surfaces Daily

Tables, devices, light switches and faucets are but a few you should tend to.

The new coronavirus is ramping up its reach. Reports indicate that the virus may remain alive on surfaces for hours or even days, but no one yet knows exactly how long COVID-19 thrives on countertops, etc.

Because of this, all of us need to do our part in helping to prevent community spread in our homes and neighborhoods. In addition to avoiding close contact with each other, you can make a difference by incorporating simple changes to your daily hygiene routine.

What should you be doing? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you should clean and disinfect the frequently touched surfaces in your home daily.

These include, but may not be limited to:

  • table tops
  • doorknobs
  • light switches
  • handles
  • desks
  • phones
  • keyboards
  • toilets
  • faucets
  • sinks

You will want to use the proper solution to do the job. The CDC says you should use bleach that has not expired mixed with water, or an alcohol. Other EPA registered household disinfectants can also work well.

Make sure your bleach hasn’t expired if you use it. To make a bleach solution, mix:

5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water
OR
4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

If you are using an alcohol solution, it needs to be at least 70% alcohol. Other household products such as Lysol spray can disinfect, but you will want to make sure that whatever you use meets the EPA’s standards for fighting COVID-19.
