It’s The International Year of Nurses and Midwives: How to Get Involved

Show your support online, or organize your own Walk the Talk walk, for starters.

They care for us at our worst moments, are there to celebrate some of our best, and keep us alive. Nurses and midwives play a vital role in healthcare systems across the world. They face the front lines with grace, often working in challenging and stressful conditions.

But there’s a problem: we don’t have nearly enough of them. It’s a fact that worldwide, there is currently a shortage of 18 million healthcare workers. According to the World Health Organization, (WHO), 9 million additional nurses and midwives are needed if the world is going to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.

In response to this need, the World Health Assembly and partners such as the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) have come together to mark the year 2020 as the International Year of Nurses and Midwives.

And you can, too. How? It’s easy. As a simple starter, you can get active on social media. Join the appreciation campaign on Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn using the hashtags #SupportNursesAndMidwives, #Nurses2020 and #midwives2020.

You can help spread the word. Share your videos and photos of nurses, midwives, health leaders, patients and influencers  online showing support for nurses and midwives and explaining why these workers are essential to our wellbeing.

Or, if you have a creative bent, consider participating in the Health for All film festival, and organizing your own national Walk the Talk. Every bit counts. To learn more about what you can do,  visit the WHO online.
