Are Dental Implants For You?

If you’re in good health with a solid jaw bone, you could be a candidate.

A life with troublesome teeth can be expensive and painful. It can also make you feel self-conscious, if your smile isn’t all you feel it could be.

Are you a candidate for dental implants? According to the Canadian Dental Association, if you’re in good health with healthy gums, and you have enough bone in your jaw to support the implants, they could be for you. It’s also important that you don’t smoke or chew tobacco as this can damage the health of your mouth.

Dental implants are comprised of an artificial tooth that’s attached to your jaw with a titanium metal root. Getting them in place requires multiple surgeries that span over a few months.

While the process is lengthy, the results can be rewarding and it’s a good option if you need to replace a few missing teeth with something long-lasting and solid.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the advantages to getting implants as opposed to a dental bridge or dentures, is that fact that implants won’t ever slip, make noise or cause any damage to your existing bone structure.

And cavities? Those are a thing of the past. Of course, you’ll have to take good care of your implants, just as you do your natural teeth.

Dental implants do carry the risk of infection at the implant site, and the risk of nerve damage, though rare.
