From airplanes to zoos and public washrooms, these new moms have it covered.
Birth is complex. We’ve all heard about mothers who had no idea they were pregnant until their young one decided to pop out at the mall, couples who’ve been caught in the car on the way to the hospital and other zany outdoor pregnancy mishaps. It just goes to show that giving birth is a process full of surprises and then some.
Here are four of the craziest places women have given birth:
1) At the Zoo
We’re all part of this great natural kingdom called Earth, right? This little baby seemed to know it and wanted to say ‘hi’ to the monkeys and kangaroos, first thing.
Drea Hubbard was born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium last Sunday. Her parents were on a family outing for the day when Drea decided to come out three weeks early. Kymica and Justin Hubbard, the proud parents, say they plan on bringing little Drea to the zoo for her future birthdays.
“I’ll [tell her] ‘Hey this is where dad delivered you’ and the beautiful story behind it,” says Justin.
2) At the Grocery Store
The staff at an Atlantic Superstore in Halifax, Canada will never look at that washroom in the same way.
In late April, Ashleigh Miller Cross thought she was going out to complete a routine shopping trip. Little did she know that she’d come home with little Ezra in her arms.
Ashleigh’s story is one of those unbelievable ones. She’d given birth to a healthy baby girl just 10 months before, and the birth of her second child came as a complete surprise.
“I really had no idea,” Cross said to ctvnews.ca.“I presumed I hadn’t lost any weight because I only had Mia ten months ago, so I mean I didn’t grow any extra so it’s just the same size. I didn’t have any cravings.”
Ashleigh’s baby boy was born at a healthy 8 pounds in the store’s public washroom, with the help of a cashier and other staff.
For its part, the grocery store donated a year’s supply of diapers to the happy family.
3) In Flight
Kadiju is a baby girl who was born “in international waters” this spring. Her mother was flying aboard Turkish airlines between Conakry in Guinea to Burkina Faso’s capital city of Ouagadougou, in West Africa when the infant decided her time had come to see the world.
Was there a doctor on board? No, but a very attentive flight crew made for one amazing journey. Mom and baby are said to be doing well.
4) On the Road
Turns out, it happens in the movies and also in real life. Cole Hudson was born in the back of his family’s Jeep, while en route to the hospital, in Michigan. Actually, more precisely, he landed in his mom’s yoga pants.
In a story of heroism and near disaster, Cole’s father Jeff Hudson, had to perform emergency CPR on the tiny infant as he turned blue and was unresponsive. Everything turned out Okay though, in the end.
Cole is now safely at home with his older brother and happy parents, in Fowlerville.
