I found out personally that Dr Serur is not in the business of giving false hope and he saved me from the excruciating pain of my cancer metastasizing and, more importantly, he saved my life. I too wanted other options and he wanted to give them to me but they were not available. It was a hard truth but his words brought me to my senses. He said if I did not follow his prescribed course, he could not treat me. The power was still with advising me as to how to proceed. I did not think he gave me this advice because I am a fat catholic girl but rather, he wanted to save my life.; and he did. While Dr Serur was not my first choice, he was my best choice. My GYN had recommended him and I went elsewhere first. That cost me a year of ongoing symptoms as the dr. in question was more involved with himself than my well being.
My final comment as someone who went through my diagnosis and treatment pretty much alone, due to covid, is if you want to burn time while your cancer grows, Dr Serur is not the choice for you. If you want to get on with your life, he, for me, was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. No regrets; only gratitude.

I honestly have never had a doctor to speak to me the way that this doctor ( Eli Serur) spoke to me when I visited him in 2018, from a referral that my Ob-Gyn had given me. Yes 3 years ago and his words still hunt me to this day. It is a historical and common practice for OBGYN's to encourage women of color to have a hysterectomy without educating or encouraging women of color of other options to explore when trying to preserve their uterus for child birth. Whenever there is an issue with a woman of color's uterus...fibroids, heavy bleeding, cysts, etc. doctors always resort to suggesting that black and brown women should have a hysterectomy. Eli Serur is one of those practitioners who did just that. I shall NEVER forget in 2018, being in that examination room, placing my feet in those stirrups and upon completion of the pelvic exam that he'd given, he immediately said, "Yeah, you're going to need to have a hysterectomy." and I replied (at the age of 46) "But I would like to have children." He replied, "Why? Your eggs are dead." I was appalled at what I had just heard. I could not believe that an actual doctor could be so insensitive and utter those words to me. He never performed an ultra sound on me. He never conducted a hysteroscopy on me. He never did any other exam on me other than an pelvic exam with his hands. In his mind, I assume, that I was just another woman of color or "colored woman" for that matter, with fibroids. He judged me based on the color of my skin. He didn't judge me on the Degrees that I'd earned. He didn't judge on how well of a classroom teacher that I was. He judged me on the basis of my skin color. Those words will never be forgotten, "Why? Your eggs are dead." After that office visit, my boyfriend who was also present in the room during the exam, witnessed the hurt that came upon me as soon as this doctor (Serur) left room. I cried so hard. Not at the idea of having to have a hysterectomy but because in this day and age you still have doctors that rally the idea of hysterectomies being the only option for women of color. I went back to my referring OBGYN and told her of my experience with Eli Serur. She was shocked and apologetic for referring me to him. Luckily I was able to find other OBBYN's and Endocrinologists who demonstrated excellent levels of professionalism and who provided me with options of how to preserve my uterus for child birth. Yes it took me 3 years to write this review because I honestly wanted to sweep this experience under the rug and try to forget it, but I haven't. For years it has tugged at me to share this with some other women "of color" who might experience his unprofessionalism. I hope that no woman of any color would have to experience this from any doctor and hope that Eli Serur has learned to demonstrate compassion, bed side manner and a level of professional and respect for his patients of color.

Dr. Serur is the absolute best Doctor/Surgeon. I just had a laparoscopy done by Dr. Serur and my surgery went excellent. I was very nervous before the procedure and the Doctor came to speak to me before I was brought into the OR and he took the time to answer all my questions and put my mind at ease. After that, I wasn't nervous anymore. I am so glad I was recommended by my gyn to go to Dr. Serur. And his staff is so nice too.

Amazing doctor and staff. I truly cannot say enough good things. He explained everything he was going to do during my surgery, answered all of my questions and addressed concerns in a way that I understood. Doreen was able to schedule the OR for me without issue. I have heard horror stories from people recovering from the same procedure that I had, but I had absolutely no issues. I called with follow-up questions during recovery and everyone was responsive and helpful. Have had 2 post-op appointments since then and still love him and his staff. HIGHLY recommend.

I do not recommend this doctor. He is so rude!! Many times, I've heard him ask patients to leave because they had a crying baby in the waiting room. As an ob/Gyn, he should be more understanding. That's what babies do! He is really a miserable guy. He walks around complaining to his nurses, or laughing at how easy his day was. I just do not recommend him. He may know his work, but his attitude turned me away.

I was referred to Dr. Serur by my GYN doctor. I liked Dr. Serur for his honesty in getting to the heart of my pain. He seems to be a warm and caring doctor and will take the time to answer your questions with direct responses.

I was referred to him by my regular GYN because i had fibroids in my uterus. Dr. Serur was great!!!! He was compassionate and very knowledgeable. I had to have a myomectomy done (Dr Serus was the surgeon), which is the removal of the fibroids from the uterus. I was so pleased with him that i remained his patient and never went back to my regular GYN. I recommend him; you can feel comfortable that he will get to the bottom of whatever is wrong with you.

Biography

Eli Serur, MD, is the chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Staten Island University Hospital. He is a double board-certified surgeon who specializes in gynecologic oncology.Dr. Serur's passion for oncology started as a medical student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. During a pathology internship, he appreciated the gratification that comes from detecting cancers early and offering care that allows patients to live better and longer. "The ability to treat patients over a long time frame was very appealing. I liked the thought of staying connected with them and developing meaningful relationships that improved their quality of life," he says. After completing his residency at Kings County Hospital Center and fellowship at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Dr. Serur spent 27 years as director of gynecologic oncology at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, followed by 22 years as director of gynecologic oncology and minimally invasive surgery at Richmond University Medical Center. He joined Northwell Health in 2019, bringing considerable expertise in complex surgical techniques with a focus on minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic surgeries for ovarian cysts and masses, uterine fibroids, ovarian and cervical cancers, and endometriosis."With these surgeries, patients can return home much faster, sometimes even the same day," he says. "That speeds recovery, enables them to return to normal activities and leads to better outcomes."Dr. Serur was one of the first physicians in the country to advocate for abandoning a technique known as morcellation, in which uterine fibroids are removed by dividing tissue into numerous fragments, increasing the risk of undetected cancerous tissue spreading within the uterus. He was also one of the first to develop an alternate, innovative technique that could remove fibroids far more safely. In 2014, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against the procedure, in part thanks to Dr. Serur's efforts. As part of a team of experts who work together to create personalized treatment plans-including medical and radiation oncologists, nutritionists and other specialists-Dr. Serur is dedicated to what he sees as his most important skill: listening to patients. "I feel that I'm empathetic, and that comes from making sure my patients have a voice in their care," he says. "Communication and trust are everything when it comes to cancer treatment-that's what drives recovery."
