I was referred to Dr. Buys to be assessed for possible narrow angle glaucoma. I was assessed by an intern not Dr. Buys, she spent a few emotionless minutes with me, asserting that I was in danger if I didn't accept laser treatment to my eyes, she dismissed my questions about risk, she had no emotion. Shaken by her attitude I sought a second opinion from Dr. Neeru Gupta at St. Mike's, and I am so grateful. Dr. Gupta was respectful, did tests to challenge my eyes and then asses them, and determined that I DEFINITELY did not have the condition that Dr. Buys was pushing laser treatment for. I am so sad to read how many people had their precious eyesight callously damaged by Dr. Buys, who is now at Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute. That facility should be challenged about her shocking record.

I always thought she was very good but after reading some comments and thinking of how my glaucoma procedure basically left me completely blind in the left eye it does seem that maybe she wasn't all that great. Other than that procedure, she seemed like a very good doctor and always took a good look at me during visits. I feel terrible for those whose lives were impacted negatively in a major way.

Dr. Buys resigned from membership in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) effective August 31, 2020 and closed her clinic/surgical office in Toronto Western Hospital, 399 Bathurst Street. Many of her patients with multiple post-surgical complications who complained to the CPSO will now have access to other ophthalmologists.

Dr. Buys has blinded me. During a trabeculectomy she said I needed, the sudden drop in intraocular pressure (IOP) caused a supra choroidal hemorrhage filling my left eyeball with blood (hyphema). The pain was extreme. Dr. Buys did nothing, claiming later that I had not told her about the pain, so she did not note it therefore it never happened according to her. On Day 1 post-op I could not see because of the blood in my eye. This was normal she said. Same thing next day. She did nothing during my follow-up visits. Two weeks later when she was absent my IOP went up to 43 mmHg and Dr. Devenyi did a washout of the blood. Too late. My optic nerve was damaged, my cornea stained, and I was blind. My eyeball shrank inwards (hypotony) causing my upper eyelid to droop (ptosis). I look like a freak. NEVER have surgery by Dr. Buys. Go to St. Michael’s or Sunnybrook hospitals. Doctors in Ontario have all their legal expenses paid under the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) and I do not have the $100K to sue her.

This mean old dog should have retired a long time ago. Was recently in a desperate situation that she was partially responsible for and she claimed "files were in storage which turned out to be a lie!!!...what a sickening human being.
Looking me in the eye and refusing to help which may have taken all of 10 minutes.
The Mayo Clinic fixed the issue no problem but at Great expense.

As a patient of Dr Buys for more years that I recall - regular check ups, monitoring for glaucoma and cataract surgery on both eyes which restored my 20/20 vision - for me her decision to retire means the loss of her professional and caring services for others who may need her care.

I recently had to go to the emergency room with severe eye pain. My friends suggested Toronto Western since they said this is the best place for eyes. Boy were they right. Dr Buys and her team looked after me and I have no doubt that they saved my sight. All I can say is thank-you.
