I highly recommend Dr. Gargiulo for any woman struggling with fertility issues that like me needs to undergo surgery for Endometrioses and fibroids. I flew from San Francisco to Boston for my procedure, had all appointments through telemedicine and couldn’t be more pleased with Dr. Gargiulo, his team and the nursing staff at Brigham and women’s hospital. Of all doctors I talked to about Endometrioses only Dr. Gargiulo talked about fertility preservation and that gave me confidence. He understood and cared for what was the most important thing for me, to be able to get pregnant.

Dr. Gargiulo is an exceptional physician. We scheduled a visit with Dr. Gargiulo for a second opinion after finding out that uterine fibroids were preventing me from getting pregnant. Dr. Gargiulo exhibited warmth, empathy, and understanding to our unique medical needs. He provided extraordinary guidance in the midst of several challenges for both me and my husband that adversely impacted our ability to have children. He coordinated my reproductive surgery needs with my husband’s health care team so that we were able to complete several medical procedures, including IVF. His exceptional knowledge, expertise, and attentiveness alleviated our fears. We have two beautiful children as a result. As an African-American woman, I have first-hand experience with the deleterious effects of inequity in our health care system. Dr. Gargiulo’s dedication as a physician, mentor, and medical scholar gives hope and promise for health equity in America.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Garguilo. From my first interaction with him, Dr. Garguilo was reassuring, highly knowledgeable, helpful, patient, and kind. I had a robotic assisted myomectomy preformed to remove a 10 cm fibroid from my uterus. Using cutting edge technology, he was able to remove the fibroid. He thoroughly explained every aspect of my treatment plan. The staff at both of his offices, Exeter Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital were all extremely responsive. My recovery has been extremely quick and virtually painless. I am forever grateful to Dr. Garguilo for his beautiful work, comforting bedside manner, and for helping restore my quality of life with no long term effects.

Dr Gargiulo is the whole package! He is a provider that is highly proficient in knowledge and skills and his level of expertise has surpassed all others in his field. He also is the most compassionate doctor I have ever met! I have a long history of GYN pathology since 1995 and I had a highly successful Robotic Assisted Myomectomy for a 10 cm fibroid performed by him in 2010. Dr Gargiulo was able to do what 3 other GYN doctors could not. In 2020, I found myself with fibroids once more and knew that the only person that I trusted was Dr. G! Besides my complex GYN history I have a very complicated cardiovascular history. Dr. G took the time necessary to address all of my concerns. He is genuinely compassionate, kind and truly listens to individual patient needs and cares about the welfare of his patients! I urge anyone who has a complex medical/surgical pathology to seek him out! His level of expertise will give you the best medical/surgical outcome possible. He is a God send!

Dr. Gargiulo is a truly excellent doctor and I can't recommend him enough. I initially came to him years ago seeking to freeze my eggs due to a severe case of endometriosis. He helpfully guided me through the process, and I was happy to complete several successful cycles of egg freezing under his care. Years later, after meeting my husband and deciding to start a family, I returned to Dr. Gargiulo, who talked through our plans for addressing infertility from every angle. When we decided to do a fresh cycle of IVF and ran into a terrible dispute with my insurance, he and his assistant went above and beyond what I would expect of anyone in that situation. They were always ready to help at the shortest notice during the weeks of the dispute. We won the case, and my husband and I went on to have a successful cycle of IVF at our first attempt despite a very low number of eggs retrieved. We were thrilled! I never once doubted Dr. Gargiulo's expertise, judgment, or advice. He explains everything in great detail and treats you with respect rather than talking down to you. He answers all questions with care and attention. What stands out as well are his kindness, humor, and genuine human touch. He is a generous doctor who clearly loves helping his patients. I will continue to seek treatment for infertility and endometriosis from him and cannot think of a better place in the area in which to do this than the BWH Infertility/Reproductive Medicine Center. While I can't say that all of the administrative staff at the hospital have the professionalism and competence of Dr. Gargiulo, I am reassured that the medical care I receive at BWH is of the very highest quality.

I highly recommend Dr. Antonio Gargiulo and the entire BWH staff for surgical treatment of uterine fibroids whether or not you live in the greater Boston area. The extraordinary care they provide is worth traveling to BWH, if your budget and health insurance allow. Dr. Gargiulo and hospital staff will go out of their way to facilitate the process for out-of-state patients.

When I was diagnosed with multiple fibroids, a friend in the Boston area suggested that I consult with Dr. Gargiulo, who had treated her fibroids. (My regular gynecologist does not perform laparoscopic robotic myomectomies.) Though I live in northern Virginia, she felt that Dr. Gargiulo’s expertise and dedication to patients merited the extra effort on my part. She was right. My surgery ended up being more complex than originally predicted, yet the outcome has been spectacular. My almost-50-year-old body has returned to its immediate post-college shape and my menstrual cycle is no longer debilitating.

Dr. Gargiulo and the BWH staff did everything possible to accommodate me as a long-distance patient. My initial consultations with Dr. Gargiulo occurred via email. Afterwards, his staff quickly contacted me to provide an order for an MRI, which I obtained in Virginia. I sent a disc with images to Dr. Gargiulo, and the MRI facility forwarded the radiologist’s report. Once I decided to proceed with surgery, Dr. Gargiulo’s surgical coordinator booked all pre-op appointments for the same day. I flew up in the morning, took the T to BWH and spent the afternoon at the hospital. Everything was so efficient that I could have flown home that evening.

For the surgery itself, I arrived the day before and stayed in Boston for 10 days. A family member joined me; you will need some assistance post-op. We found a three-bedroom, two-bath Air BnB rental six-tenths of a mile from BWH, right on the Green Line. It was cheaper than staying in a hotel, provided a fully equipped kitchen and was walking distance from multiple restaurants and a full-sized grocery store; the building had laundry facilities but we did not use them. For those who are not local, I have one recommendation for packing: Bring lots of loose, comfortable sweat/yoga pants and PJ bottoms with elastic waists. My abdomen was swollen (for several weeks after surgery) and I couldn’t fit into jeans or regular pants, even those with stretch. I had to buy three more pairs of yoga pants when in Boston (while several sat in my closet at home).

For anyone who travels by plane, two items of which to be aware: 1) You will not be allowed to lift or carry anything heavier than 10 lbs. If you travel alone, make sure that all of your luggage can be checked and that carry-ons both meet the weight limit and fit under the seat. The airline I used said flight attendants were not required to help me place a bag in the overhead compartment and I could be at the mercy of strangers. 2) Because I had carry-ons that weighed more than 10 lbs, I requested wheelchair service to get my bags and myself to the gate. (I actually was fully mobile; I walked just over half a mile the day following surgery, two miles the day after that, and four miles the day after that. Laparoscopic definitely is the way to go!) When I explained that I needed wheelchair service because I would be 10 days post-op, the airline required a letter from Dr. Gargiulo certifying that it was safe for me to fly. I informed Dr. Gargiulo’s staff the day before my post-op check-up, he gave me the letter during my appointment and I flew home that afternoon.

Again, if your personal circumstances permit, Dr. Gargiulo and BWH are worth the journey and extra expense.

I saw Dr. Gargiulo after seeing three other doctors regarding a tubal ligation I had done while I was in an abusive relationship. Two of them were clinics that use "tubal ligation reversal" as a way for Google to direct patients to their clinics, bring them in and push IVF on them (because they don't actually do the procedure). The third was a referral who treated me so poorly that I had given up on ever having children with my partner. Not only is Dr. Gargiulo incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, he is also very warm and kind, and I always left his office feeling very positive and optimistic. We did discuss the difference between IVF and the tubal reanastemosis procedures, and ultimately he agreed with and validated my decision to want the surgical procedure. I always felt like I was in excellent hands with him, his staff, and the staff at the day surgery center in Boston, and never had any doubt that I was receiving anything less than the best possible care. Everything was very clearly explained - from the process, to billing, to the procedure, and what to expect after the procedure - to me as well as my partner. Absolutely phenomenal experience, my one regret is that I wasn't able to see him first.

Dr. Antonio R. Gargiulo's response
This is a most kind review, and it is so effective in its simplicity. It truly expresses a fundamental concept in modern medicine: a plurality of approaches and skill levels exist in the medical establishment. Patients who take the time to research their providers thoroughly usually end up securing the right provider for their condition. This is particularly true for very complex conditions such as endometriosis (in all its forms). Care of endometriosis should be conducted exclusively in high-speciality centers, such as the Boston Center for Endometriosis (http://bostoncenterendometriosis.org). This is the only endometriosis center completely staffed by full time Harvard Medical School faculty, who can tackle the condition armed with the most advanced biological, pharmacological and surgical know-how. Endometriosis is what we do: from adolescence, through the fertility years, to the premenopausal years.

Biography

I have dedicated my entire medical career to the advancement of reproductive medicine, through high-impact basic and clinical investigation at Harvard Medical School. As a member of Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery since 1996, I have participated in the management of thousands of infertile couples through cutting-edge medical, laboratory and surgical treatments. I have pioneered robot-assisted reproductive surgery for uterine fibroids, endometriosis and fertility preservation, and am currently the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery for Brigham Health in Boston, MA and for Exeter Hospital, in Exeter, NH. I have cared for international patients for over two decades and have acted as a consultant for international fertility centers: I am therefore familiar with international laws and regulations, medications and sensitivities regarding fertility treatment in several nations. This peculiar experience has shaped my practice style to one of open-mindedness, flexibility and heightened cultural awareness. I have been a consultant for several high-technology companies, makers of surgical lasers and surgical robots, for many years. My involvement is highly regulated by Partners Health's and Harvard University's ethical requirements for interaction with industry. My patients consistently get the added benefit of a surgeon who is directly involved in shaping technological advancements in his specialty. My team consistently pushes the limits of what is technologically achievable in surgery.
