I had my second reconstructive ear surgery with Dr. Backous, not only did he argue with both myself and the audiologist report that my hearing was much much worse than before my surgery Backous SEWED my ear on too low! seriously!??? Now not only am I close to being completely deaf on that side. my glasses are crooked when I'm wearing them. I'm 2 years post surgery and he insured me that it was my anxiety causing concern over the drastic hearing loss and not the actual result of the surgery that (In my opinion) he botched. I had a previous reconstruction with another Dr. and he did an amazing job! I will never go back to Backous.

Some of these reviews give Dr Backous negative feedback because of his bedside manner and arrogance, but, in my opinion, he has every right to be arrogant. He operated on my daughter who had a one-in-a -milion fluke trauma to her inner ear. The right side of her face was paralyzed and her balance center was destroyed. Dr. Backous and team was able to restore her balance center and facial nerve, reversing the facial palsy which would have left her face very disfigured. He has every right to be arrogant because he is a "rock star" of a surgeon. This is a very elite specialty , with only a handful in the country. If you want a extremely knowledge, skilled surgeon , he is your guy.

I have had chronic ear issues all my life, I have seen many ear doctors. Dr Backous is by far one of the most condescending, arrogant doctors. He talked at me about surgery, I would never let him cut into me. He has the bed side manner of a brick wall. No thanks.

I was referred to see him from another ENT. My mistake was apparently booking the last appt of the day. He was running late. I came in because of severe ear pain, pressure and tinnitus. He was condescending, didn't listen, and since he was running late, my appt lasted all of ten minutes. He spent more time looking at his watch than he did my file, and only looked at my MRI as an afterthought. He told me I needed $5,000 hearing aids, which his office would gladly supply. WHAT GOOD is hearing aids for severe ear pain and tinnitus? That was his ONLY diagnosis. I cannot believe this arrogant *** can even be allowed to practice. I'm considering legal action.

He doesn't want to fix your health problem unless you are in for surgery. He just wants you to go away and not speak out loud to him. You will get less than 5 minutes of his time, and he will make you feel like you got assaulted...somehow...

I had conductive hearing loss that was getting really bad. I was tired of it. It was becomming a handicap at work and my wife was losing patience. Dr. Backous came recommended and he helped me a great deal. He performed a stapendectomy on my bad ear (right) and the results were amazing. This guy changed my life! Thank You Dr. Backous!

I felt going to him was an important piece in my journey to discover a diagnosis- he really didn't add anything already known. I too felt it was a one sided conversation-directed toward the computer screen. I thought afterwards- did I really need to be there? I can handle the difficult information- I do not need to be patronized or talked down to. Which is how I felt.

I've dealt with chronic ear infections since 4 years old. I've been through mastoidechtomies, tubes, repaired eardrums, cholesteatoma removals etc. I decided to overlook a doctor's arrogance thinking he would be the one to solve my problems once and for all - MISTAKE. While his appointments tend to be on time, they're incredibly short, and you probably won't get to make more than a single sentence contribution to the "conversation" (a conversation implies an exchange of communication between individuals- his appointments are more like 15 minute med school lectures). If needing surgery, he passes you off to his nurse Barbara, who is the kindest soul you'll ever meet. Within a year after surgery with him, my ear drainage problems persisted and he really could have cared less honestly. Needless to say, I went to a different ENT, who also happened to show me I had a hole in my eardrum that Backous neglected. If this is your first time with an ENT doc, I warn you - seek another doctor.

Dr Backous performed operations on both my husbands ears and when he was examined by a reputable audioligist for hearing aids, the audiologist was horrified at what had been done. One ear was so bad that she could not fit it with a hearing aid as the canal was so mutilated. I dont know what we should do,if anything, about this but it doesnt seem right.
