He destroyed my father's life. My father had mild dementia, and Dr. Hamilton inserted a shunt since we all erroneously thought that he had normal pressure hydrocephalus. Hamilton waited 30 days to check if the shunt was causing damage. He should have checked 1 week later, to see if there was bleeding since by his own admission, the bleeding could have started right away.

By the time we went in for the CT scan 30 days after surgery, there was major bleeding in his brain. My father became temporarily paralyzed on one side. He had to have holes drilled in his head to take out the blood. He was never the same after. He could no longer walk properly or be independent, relying 24 hours on care, which consumed much of my mother's savings. Hamilton insisted on turning back on the shunt, which caused bleeding again. We left it on the lowest setting after that, becauase Dr. Hamilton felt it was helping. Finally, after one year, I told his clinic to turn it off completely. I did not trust Hamilton's judgment. It wa a good call - my father finally was able to sleep at night - meaning that he went through one year of unnecessary suffering in his sleep, because of the lack of care and attention of Dr. Hamilton. He may be a "nice" man, but he doesn't care nor apologize. I would never recommend him. My father suffered brain damage needlessly because of him. The pain and terrible quality of life that my father suffered for two years, arising from the shunt surgery and poor after-care, continues to haunt me years after his death.

His ego gets in the way of his patient’s care. Refusal to admit he was wrong or engage in cooperative care condemning some patients to live life in pain. Get a referral for someone else, he will not listen to what you have to say about your own situation.

Dr Hamilton and Dr Edwards were very helpful and explained my upcoming surgery in great detail. I have since recovered from my ETV surgery, and Dr Edwards followed up addressing any concerns and questions I had. They gave me my life back. I highly recommend them.

I will repeat what it has been mentioned before” Very little understanding of the outside world, he is what I would have expected a brain surgeon to be“, low self-esteem person.

My father had mild dementia and other indicators of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Dr. Hamilton inserted a shunt. However, one month later, when my father underwent the post-op CT scan, it was apparent that he suffered severe bilateral subdural hematomas and associated hemorrhaging in the brain, caused by a shunt over-drainage. The shunt was immediately turned off, but my father suffered irreparable damage. He lost significant quality of life, including losing all of his independence, becoming unable to walk well, exercise, speak, dress himself, bathe himself or go to the bathroom without help (all of which he was capable of doing before the shunt surgery). Please be careful before proceeding with this surgery. Also, this terrible outcome could have been averted to some degree, if a post-op CT scan was done earlier and the bleeding was caught earlier. We lost our father, and it's been at times agonizing to see him suffer. I wish I could take back time, and not have done this shunt procedure. Dr. Hamilton is a nice, smart doctor, but the post-op CT scan should not have been delayed, given the amount of damage that could happen from shunt-related bleeding in the brain.

I have visited Dr. Hamilton and his associate, Dr. Urbaneja, many times, undergoing brain surgery because of Hydrocephalus. He is very knowledgeable and concerned about his patients. It is 11/2 years since the surgery and I continue to be monitored and to improve. I consider myself to be blessed in having Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Urbaneja . I was also very fortunate in having my family doctor, Dr Subramanian working with me and the doctors at South Calgary Health Campus.

Dr. Hamilton & his team have saved my life many a time. I feel very blessed to have had Dr. Hamilton as my surgeon and trust him to deliver excellent care that is well thought out and in my best interest. He may wait to preform surgery until absolutely sure it’s the best course of action and this can sometimes take some time, but is ultimately for the best. I have full and complete trust in Dr. Hamilton and his team and feel completely safe and comfortable in his ability.
