I recently became a patient of Dr. Kasperbauer. He diagnosed me with a cancer and treated me with compassion and excellent care from the minute he stepped in the door. He knew, off hand, what the most current research and literature on my diagnosis was and made me feel comfortable and confident that he would take good care of me. Which is exactly what he and his team did! He was thorough and open to me asking questions (I had a lot) and has continued his excellent care in my post operative follow up. He is not your average surgeon, I would recommend him to anyone with a similar problem. Feeling very grateful writing this.

I was shocked to read some of the comments below. Dr. K. operated on my husband and we feel he is wonderful. We were not looking for a best friend, we needed an excellent surgeon for a very complicated situation and found that with Dr. Kasperbauer.

In a lifetime that has seen several otolaryngologists, this one is the at the top of the list. His staff is fabulous and I found his level of knowledge to be stellar. I appreciate a doctor that is on the top of his game and commands a room. I need confidence. I need a doctor that is able to be bold and compassionate, and Dr. Kasperbauer fills both of hose.

Dr. Kasperbauer is highly regarded by his fellow Mayo physicians. However he also has a rather regard for himself. His regal entrance into the consultation room made me consider whether I should offer to kiss his ring. The two attending staff walked on eggshells around him during our consultation. He is highly trained and knowledgeable. That was very apparent. However his communication skills are very poor. As he began discussing various aspects and ramifications of my condition, he stared off to the side, with no eye contact and proceeded to rapidly pour out information, much like a well-worn medical school lecture. He made no effort to translate the information for a layman's benefit. When I tried to ask a clarifying question, he finally made eye contact and snapped, "I'm NOT finished yet!" Then he looked away and continued with his medical lecture. I had never before experienced such a total breakdown of communication with a physician. He brought a whole new level to term "social ineptness." It was rather comical in a way. At one point, I actually discretely looked around for room for hidden cameras, thinking that perhaps we were on John Quinonas' program, "What would You Do....(if your doctor's bedside manner totally FAILED)?" I then had the quandary of how to quell the sudden urge to giggle at his posturing. When we did mange to ask another question, it was hard to not bust out laughing when he vehemently protested our verbal intrusion with, "I answered that already!" We said nothing, but thought: " If we knew the answer... why would we ask a question? He did condescend himself to answer it. And we were kind enough to not point out that said information had not been included in his previous, long-winded lecture.

My husband and I managed to stay polite and attentive. We did mange to get some information. Sometimes you just have to hang in there and separate the wheat from the chaff.

While probably being a very good surgeon, he is terribly challenged in the art of being a doctor.
He would highly benefit from having someone else with good interview skills team up with him in doing consultations. However, it is doubtful whether his ego would allow him to avail himself of this much-needed improvement.

After careful thought and consideration, we chose to proceed with another Mayo doctor whose bedside manner was excellent in every way.

This guy is one of the WORST doctors I have ever encountered. He appears to have been at this so long that he has lost all compassion for his patients. He just goes through the motions and could care less if he answers anything you need to know. When I pressed the issue about a lesion I know was in my throat, and he could not find, he actually threw his arms up and down, with a loud sigh, making no doubt that he was tired of me and anything i had to say. As he proceeded to check my throat again, he roughly shoved his fingers down my throat and made me gag. I am sure he did this intentionally; no apology was offered at all and he simply stated there was nothing wrong with me and that I would have to figure out what I wanted to do next. Excuse me? What the hell did I pay this bum for? Don't go to this guy, he sucks.
