Holidays are always the hardest time to lose a loved one. I recently lost a parent and as hard as this was at this time of year, the care team comprised of nurses, therapists, person support workers (both in hospital and the hospice) were amazing with one exception - the palliative care services provided by Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim came across as hollow, self-serving with a dictator-like approach. As we looked to best support our loved one by respecting/and expressing his wishes (when he could no longer do so) during his palliative phase, Dr. Kim completely disregarded our "shared" role in this journey and expected obedience to him, to obey all without question, and he continuously applied a very paternalistic model of physician care. Dr. Kim would greatly benefit from learning and adopting a patient-family centered approach to his palliative care practice as a physician; the rest of the care team we experienced certainly embraces such an approach perhaps he could learn from his team members. In the end, our loved one passed away peacefully surrounded by those he most treasured at St. Joseph's Hospice - and we are thankful each day, and feel blessed, by the heart-warming, loving, special relationships each one of held with him and we have no personal regrets as we grieve and struggle through this significant loss for our family. Grieving is hard and in our case we are left unsettled by Dr Kim's insensitive approach in our final prescious days with our loved one. My sincere hope for Dr. Kim is that he will read this post, genuiely reflect on his palliative care practice, be open to positive change, and recognize that the physician-family relationship holds considerable healing power.

Dr Kim made our palliative journey more stressful because of his arrogant, condescending attitude. He did not respect our loved one's wishes or our ability to understand his needs based on body language. I believe he would think he communicated with us but he communicated "at us" and raced out the door after he said his piece. He lectured us because we stayed the night with our loved one - assuring us the death was still days away - when in fact, our loved one died that night.

My husband was brought to the ER with an abcess (I am a nurse) and Dr.Kim sent him off with a preacription. I tried to tell Kim that no, my husband needed surgery immediately and dismissed us and sent us off (Dec18). So we filled the Rx and my husband was back in Dec 20 and had emergency surgery as he was now septic and almost died!!

This man's arrogance and cynicism is a danger to any patient he treats. It is a travesty that he is held in such high esteem since other doctors
are more likely to blindly follow his flawed diagnoseses.

Dr Kim presents as a competent and intelligent doctor. He does not coddle the patient, and he tries to diagnose what is wrong efficiently and in a straight forward manner. However his confidence in his medical knowledge leads him to diagnose rather quickly and with limited testing. (I have even overheard hospital clerks regard him as a doctor that gets people in and out - quick!) This apparent lack of curiosity prevents Dr Kim considering other possible explanations. His attempts at empathy and professionalism seem robotic at best, as though learned from a text book. Also, like many doctors in Sarnia, Dr Kim has a tendency to broadly paint many ailments are in some way drug related. Unfortunately, despite his obvious breadth of knowledge, this is a doctor that will potentially misdiagnose because he believes his first answer is always the right one.

I had an awful experience with Dr. Kim. After being brought to the hospital by ambulance since I had received a good knock on my head because of a fall from my roof, I was pretty dazed and confused. Dr. Kim took this condition to mean than I was on drugs, so I did a pee test which found no drugs other than what I was prescribed by my family doctor. Dr. Kim wrote it off to a drug overdose ( of 'unknown drugs' nonetheless ) which will forever remain on my hospital record, then he called the department of motor vehicles to recommend I have my license suspended for substance abuse. To top it off, he called my family doctor of nearly 20 years and said I must have been high on drugs to have slipped off my roof while cleaning the gutters on a sunny afternoon!? This incident has caused no end of trouble to my life. I returned to the hospital the next morning to be diagnosed as having a concussion after the new E.R. doc saw the signs and completed the tests Dr. Kim should have performed the day before. After numerous attempts by myself and family doctor to reach Dr. Kim to explain why he did no tests after the paramedics told him I had suffered head trauma. I received a message to stop calling while stating I was just a "junky," which I am far from, and do not even look like/ fit the stereotype. My doctor's calls were never returned. Forever more, I will be labeled a "substance abuser" no matter what the reason a future hospital visit is for, all thanks to Dr. Kim's unaccountable diagnosis.

Dr. Kim was overly cautious, despite myself being younger and not likely prone to some serious complications; he continued to run tests to rule out worst case scenarios. He gave me the option to come back after a few hours of rest or would happily have the staff accommodate me with a private bed while awaiting further testing first thing in the morning. I did choose to stay since it would help speed things along and he discussed the several different potential outcomes and did have me treated with a couple of preventative methods "just in case" which turned out to be the right call with some impending bad news the following day thankfully!! When Dr. Kim was getting off shift, although moved to another ward and resting briefly, he gently woke me with just a hand on my leg, stirring me enough to update and recap me on matters. He also informed me of the Doctor on duty who would be taking over as well as offered me reassurance despite the possible outcomes. I do wish I could recall the names of the nursing staff who also assisted and cared for me per his instructions as they were extremely kind and knowledgeable as well. For very overall unpleasant health discoveries, this was my first Ontario and Sarnia hospital visit and I am very grateful for the care I received. Thank you!

Dr Kim stitched my daughters face when she was three years old. He was so good to her and did an excellent job. She walked out smiling.
