On my second visit I said I guess if my P.S.A. hits 4.0 it will trigger further tests or a biopsy. He said it would take an hour to explain it to me. He then stared at me for a minute then repeated that it would take an hour and then I left. At my third visit I noticed a sign stating he will call the cops if there is any disrespectful or aggressive behaviour. On my fourth visit I asked him if my reduced ability to urinate could damage my kidneys. He got really mad and grabbed a 1/2 inch stack of wrinkled papers and pretended to look through them. He then shook them at me and said I wasn't referred to him over my kidneys but he never suggested that I go back to the walk in clinic for a referral. i then left the room and waited at the front desk for a prescription and heard his receptionist loudly tell someone he was to busy to come to the phone because he was telling a patient he had prostate cancer. I then saw a guy and his wife come down down the hallway and I could tell by the look on his face it was him. I assume that was a three minute cancer notification but I'm just guessing.

If you hear of a bad interaction with a urologist in this part of Ontario it will be this guy. I would avoid at all costs.

Only got to meet Dr. Leal near the end of his day surgery shift. He was quick, professional, relatable, and sharp and to the point. Was open to questions and answered all of them. He did my procedure (removal of teste) to-spec and I don't even need the pain meds prescribed, really. He left after the surgery (because end of his shift) and didn't debrief me or give the nurse enough info to pass on to me, but luckily the other urologist checked in on me on his way out and covered for him. Overall, no real complaints. He's a busy guy and his work on me was fine. Staff on his OR team are very sharp.

My father and husband have both been seen by Dr. Leal and felt he was nice enough. However, there have been huge problems with his office staff person. My father (86) was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in the summer of 2018 and was referred to Dr. Leal. Hormonal treatment by injection commenced and was achieving the desired result up until late spring when a small spike in his PSA was noted and then a major spike from 8 ish to 87 after his most recent bloodwork. Getting the requisition for that round of bloodwork prior to his most recent appointment was a fiasco and was ultimately handled by his regular Gp. My parents are elderly, my father is unsteady (probably because he’s really sick) and were trying to have it arranged to have the blood drawn by a community nurse from home. My mother was told by Dr. Leal’s secretary that to have that arranged she’d have to do it herself. Navigating the health system to figure that out was beyond my tech challenged mother’s skills - tracking down the correct organization, getting the numbers, working through multi-tiered phone systems, getting cut off etc. We called their family doctor to see if they could help. The office administrator there was very surprised that mom had been told she had to arrange it herself and agreed to arrange it for them. This was done within a day and dad is now able to have his blood drawn at home and mom doesn’t have to manage getting him around in public safely which we are grateful for. When my parents went to the appointment to discuss the bloodwork and next steps my father was pointedly told by Dr. Leal that he had 3-6 months if nothing is done but said that he’d refer him to an oncologist in Belleville to determine what to do next. That appointment was on July 17. My parents were told that they would hear from the cancer department within 2-3 weeks. Well, that date came and went, and they didn’t hear. Mom called the office and they were on holidays. She called the family doctor to see if there was anything he could do. They were on holidays too. So she called the cancer clinic and was told that they had never received a referral and that there was nothing they could do. A month has now gone by. The office reopened this morning and my mom went over in person to speak to the secretary and find out what happened because the phone system isn’t designed for ease of access or with the assurance that calls will be returned promptly. Indeed, the referral was described as a ‘note’ that was sitting on her desk. The secretary became very defensive, rude and was uncaring. My mother asked if it would be several more weeks to get into the clinic. My understanding with cancer is that treatment commencing as soon as possible is desired. Not sending that referral within a day or at the very least before going on holidays seems like the height of incompetence to me. With a diagnosis of potentially three months and a whole month going by and likelihood of a couple more before getting into the clinic has effectively reduced my dad’s chances of treatment being possible. But in addition, even if there is nothing that can be done my parents require care - management of the disease, hospice, palliative care or whatever. Right now they are blowing in the wind with no recourse other than to wait and see if someone - anyone - will look after them. By all accounts, judging by the secretary’s response to my mother she is overwhelmed by her job and perhaps shouldn’t be in it. If I was Dr. Leal I’d be very concerned. I’m sure he assumes that there isn’t a problem and his request for referral has been done. He wasn’t in the office when my mom was there today.

After my first surgery Dr. R J Leal and i agreed to a follow up every 3 months. Because of the 3 month follow ups i have beat this every time before it got worse, like the first time. I just leave a message with Jennifer ( A excellent Receptionist ) and she calls me back with a appointment before the end of the day.. After each surgery Dr. R J Leal prescribes antibiotics in care of my family doctor. Dr. R J Leals O.R assistants are kind-humorous -knowledgeable-informative-professional and helpful , all of the very same traits of Dr R J Leal. This was my fifth surgery for bladder cancer. Thank you to Dr. R J Leal, Jennifer and all the staff and volunteers at TMH.
