My daughter has strabismus and Dr. Budning did a great job with the surgery. However, the visits to his office are a nightmare. First, if you don't visit for more than a year, you have to get a new referral from your family doctor. Second, when you finally get an appointment you have to wait at least an hour in the hallway. They have all these signs in the office about being early for your appointment otherwise you may be rescheduled, yet it's OK for every patient to wait an hour. This is completely disrespectful and hypocritical.

Okay, so let's start off by saying I'm an out of town adult patient, so I drove 5 hrs to wait 1hr in hallway, then see doctor for less than 5 mins. As a child I had congenital cataract surgery... and the eye has less than 40% vision - however, it is lazy and I constantly get vertigo and headaches. So the fix is to straighten the eye. However, I asked questions about the vision as well - if there was anything we could do, I didn't get a straight answer.
Now I am booked for pre-op a month before surgery, which seems odd...and far apart. I asked his staff "Okay but what surgery is it he is doing?" Her response was "Oh, I don't have that information, you'll have to talk to him at your appointment." Okay, so let me just drive another 5 hrs, to find out what it is he's doing?
Now, I got the confirmation email for the pre-op appointment, tried calling.....just ringing and ringing no answer. I send an email, I get an email that says the office is closed from X day to X day.. That was a week ago, and they haven't changed their automatic reply. It also says, only send 1 email...
Well, I'm not driving to Toronto for a pre-op when I know that work obligations have me unable to attend the surgery date. I have requested to have the pre-op, and surgery to be booked at the same time, or a in concurrent days, with no reply.... and says it could be up to 5 days to get a reply.. I'm so frustrated.

I have been seeing Dr. Budning for the last 16 years. I have been there 32 times and every visit better than the last. He has worked with me to overcome unrecognized eye conditions and helped improve it.

I had been to Doctor Budning for Corneal Ulcer. He is very patient, accomodative and understanding of our needs. Very good in diagnosis and quite reputable in his field
I would highly recommend him for an eye issue.

I got my surgery done a week ago for strabismus. This highly skilled specialist gave me my vision back. I now see depth and at distance. My head tilt is gone, and the double vision is 98% gone after just one week healing. I can drive again !!! He is in high demand and I consider myself privileged for being one of his patients.

I had strabismus since I was eight and he fixxed it in 2016 and also corrected the fact that after falling on my head I had developed blindness off and on in one eye, and when I came into the waiting area for my surgery he was the one that raised the head of the stretcher after the nurse flattened it because he knew that I have back problems which cause me to pass out when I lay flat, and to the people complaining about not seeing him in person you’re forgetting that Covid is preventing doctors from seeing people in person, leave him alone.

Our daughter has strabismus and has been seeing Dr. Budning (well, not actually Dr. Budning, but mostly his staff) for the better part of a year. We haven't been impressed and are now speaking to our pediatrician about switching to another ophthalmologist.

Here's the problem: By reputation, Dr. Budning is one of the best in the business. Based on his technical skills, that may well be true. I have no way to know. But ask yourself: Why all the negative reviews? I bet some families and patients are put-off in the same way we've been: Bedside manner and communication are effectively non-existent.

After nine months, we've seen Dr. Budning, himself, one time. That initial appointment was extremely rushed, unhelpful, and provided very little information. He didn’t seem interested in answering even the most basic questions. Every appointment since has been with his technicians, who are reticent to provide any information about our daughter's condition. So, after nearly a year of glasses and patching -- we don't know anything. Is her condition improving? If so, by how much? Will her glasses be permanent? How about the occasional turning of her eye? What happens next? Basic questions, right? I wish I knew the answers.

If you want to know what’s happening, you’re left pounding the table to speak to the doctor (with his less-than-helpful staff) as your only option. Should that really be necessary? We're pretty reasonable people, and we’ve never asked for a different doctor for ourselves or our daughter previously. But we're also (understandably, I think) concerned about our child's eyesight. We shouldn't have to beg for information – nor to understand if other treatment options might be worth considering.

In summary, we've been quite disappointed. I wish I’d listened to my gut and switched doctors after our first appointment.
