Dr Timothy Jacob repaired my dual hernias. I had a quick recovery with no complications. I judge his surgical skills and knowledge to be excellent. His sutures were so fine that you can barely see where the three small incisions were made. However, I cannot judge his "bedside manner" for lack of a better term to be as good. During my one week post surgery visit he bluntly told me that he had expected complications because "I was a little bit frail." No one has ever said anything like that to me before, and I was too overwhelmed to ask what he meant. I went home and researched pre- frailty & frailty, and still don't know why he said that. As far as I can see I have none of the characteristics that class someone as frail or pre-frail. I have a very bad right knee which I am scheduled to have replaced next spring. I use a walking stick for stability. But my using a walking stick does not make me frail. I get more exercise than many people who do not have bad knees walking 20 - 30 minutes most days without a walking stick. At 77 I am strong, and do not have sarcopenia. His comment has made me second guess everything. If I get a cold, I wonder "Is that because I'm a little frail." His comment was hurtful, and definitely was not helpful. He did not share what he meant, so I made my own assessment. Why mention it after the fact when there had been no complications?
