I would never recommend Melanie to anyone. Her lack of communication skills and general coldness render any knowledge she has useless. I complained about the same problem for two years and she never paid attention to what I was saying, intent on her charts and lab results. I changed doctors, the new one immediately ordered the test I needed and we discovered that yes, I have cancer. She should stay on research and not treat people.

Dr. Thompson is the best Doctor that I have ever had working with health situations. She knows her stuff and she will go any distance to take good care of your needs. I am doing great today because of her care. She has addressed all of needs and referred me to best of every area that I needed for my conditions. Dr. Thompson and her staff will make you feel comfortable and very free to talk about your needs and take care of you with all the available resources necessary. I have moved from the Georgia area and I have yet to find a more caring doctor to provide the services that I received from Dr. Melanie A. Thompson. She knows her stuff and loves to help people!!!!

Melanie is a great doctor. She has always allowed me to be involved in all decisions. She has been my doctor since I was 20 and today I am 36 so for 16 years I have gone to her for all my needs. She listens and gives hugs so she is very interested in my care. Tues and Thurs. came to be since she is in research so she is busy with ARCA the rest of the time. This is good since she is one that leads the way on research and sees active patients. Her practice is very top notch. She has always been great to me. I beg to differ on the person saying they did not get choice in treatment. I have never seen any snippy behavior from Melanie. She has been very good at taking my request. I stopped some meds and it was my choice and she never got upset. I think she is awesome and is a Emory Grad who is very well respected. I know from another doctor at Piedmont that they do honor her insights so this line on her being not liked is not true.

Doctor has office hours on Tuesday and Thursdays only. On those days she will see a lot of patients and spend 4 to 5 minutes with you. She tends to want things to be done her way and when they do not she becomes very snippy. She has admitting rights at Piedmont Hospital although most doctors at the hospital don't get along with her. If you are in the hospital she visits after hours and not during normal hours, normal visiting for her would be after 7PM. If you have a question for her and you don't ask it at your appointment, it may take up to 5 days to get it answered because of her limited practice time. There are two other doctors at the practice who generally pick up the slack if she does not answer your questions but she then becomes upset when you talk to them and not to her.

Dr. Thompson is highly knowledgeable in her specialty field of infectious disease, particularly HIV medicine. However, I feel this comes at the expense of other general medical knowledge. My experience has been that she does not work well with other specialists in terms of sharing information, and her recommendations of specialists in my case have been spotty at best - I've done better with my own research. Her advice is sometimes non-specific, and she is not good at communicating with her patients after they leave the her office. Repeated calls are often necessary. Since she deals with a large number of HIV-positive patients, she may be a good choice for this condition, but I have reservations about using her as a general physician otherwise.
