Dr Parnham,
There is an urban myth that if you are sent to Gold Coast University Hospital it is so they can practice on you, not to be helped. I never believed it, now I do. There is a SYSTEMIC FAILING OF COMMUNICATION IN YOUR WARD.
My Mum Denise Graham was at Robina Public Hospital, it was closer to her home, previously she had always received care at John Flynn Hospital. I’m not sure why but she was transferred under your direction, to Gold Coast University Hospital. Dad met you once, where you announced cancer. I met with junior doctors the next day who said no, they didn’t know it was cancer as no biopsy or tests had been carried out, no cancer been diagnosed , to say this was confusing and distressing is an understatement. Mum then spent 3 weeks in your ward, each day Dad and I would be told something different, yes cancer, maybe not cancer, yes cancer, no biopsy done, no tests done, so can’t be sure.

Every day was mixed messages and ineffectual diagnosis. We began to argue as a family as we were told something different to each of us every day. You then put Mum through an unnecessary procedure, a stent in the bladder, not sure why if you knew she had cancer, can only again think of the practice it provided junior doctors. I had spoken with one of your junior doctors and told them I was recording everything and was writing everything down, I asked her as POA to contact me no matter what she assured me she would….never happened, not one call from hospital ever.
After 3 weeks of inconsistent information, I came in one day to Mum and Dad crying, she said a doctor (male) had come in the night before and told her there was nothing they could do, she was going home to die …. I was outraged. How dare you tell a dying elderly woman on endone and unable to access support at the time, there is no hope, without family support, she thought of that overnight alone… do you have a mother??? Let’s put her in that spot. Let’s empathise…I demanded to see the doctor and any staff on duty , like we had for the previous 3 weeks but this time I wasn’t moving. We had been repeatedly brushed off to this point. I can only describe the scene as, mongrel dogs scurrying for cover, they were frantic to have any details, disgrace! They locked themselves in Mums room and we were not allowed in, the nurse came out and said they were just sorting records. When they finally approached us timidly, they said unfortunately there were no records of who the doctors were who had dealt with Mum or information. WOW, just WOW!!!! Obviously, you will not miraculously have records now and if you do produce records it would prove your team to be liars. This is not an emotive after thought., at this meeting I told the junior doctors if they wanted to continue in this profession, they needed to consider their communication style. I asked them to not treat another family the way they had us. If they are in fact in a learning component of their career, they needed better tuition. I told them obviously they had not been mentored very well.

I told them we had been let down very badly by them.
Mum died 12 days after being discharged from your care, to say it as a shock is an understatement, could one of your team not discussed this withus? How very cowardly of you and all of your staff. Six months previously, Robina public hospital could not have been more considerate, perhaps you may like to undertake some training on human kindness and general bedside manner and procedures with them.

If you believe in “cause no harm” you failed. You caused my Mum and family a lot of harm.
There is a difference between God and doctors. God is Great, doctors just think they are.
All of my records will be submitted to the ombudsman, I’m pretty sure nothing will happen, ranks close, but you cannot silence my personal experience and expression of this. Shame on you!

I found Dr Parnham, arrogant, rude, non listenining and seemed to want to get you out of his office as quickly as possible, like in 7 or 8 mins.

I've seen a few urologists and nephrologists since the early 80s because I've relocated several times over the years due to work and I must say that I'm very fortunate to have found Dr Alan Parnham. He is not only very good at what he does but he's also very compassionate and always have my best interest at heart. I can't recommend him highly enough. His staff are similarly always pleasant and helpful.

Dr Parnham tells it like it is, straight to the point and very knowledgeable in his field. My father has been a patient of his for over 12 years, I have accompanied my father to all his visits and have been very thankful that in an emergency, Dr Parnham has always been available and rushed my dad into hospital on multiple occasions.
There is no sugar coating bad news when it comes, but options were offered. My father made the decision to stop further treatment, he is very thankful for those quality years he was able to have and so am I.

I have been an actual patient of Dr Parnham's for the past 14 years. Dr Parnham has a wealth of knowledge and is upfront and straight to the point, I prefer this approach. I have a few issues BUT Dr Parnham is the only specialist that has taken the time to really talk to me and offer different options. Yes, it might not be want you want to hear but I owe my life to him. I also have Dr Parnham's mobile number and have called him at 1am when i have issues one night and not only did he answer he also gave me correct advise.
I am a 51 yr old male and yes i have been seeing him since i was 37.

Alan is without a doubt the very best nephrologist around on the Gold Coast. He is very upfront with his comments, and isn’t that what you want from a professional person. He cares about me as a patient and it shows with his manner, I am sure his is like this with his other patients as well. He has looked after me for many years now and he’s always available to speak to. He is also very respected by other medical people which says a lot. His reception staff are also absolutely wonderful and so very pleasant and lovely, hope they never leave. Thanks Alan for looking after me.

Dr Parnham is the very best in his field. He always makes himself available to his patients - by providing his mobile number. He explanations are thorough and nothing is ever a problem. He gave me a second chance at being a mum, a wife and a daughter.
If he is cranky...it’s probably because his Rugby team lost 🤣
Jokes aside, if you need a nephrologist “Parny” is the very best.
