I was provided with Dr Aspe under the pretext that I had ovarian cancer due to a mass attached to my left ovary.. He immediately decided I would have a 20 inch incision to remove the tumor and my uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries. He ensured a pathologist would be on-site to determine if my tumour/cyst was cancerous. When I asked if the hysterectomy was necessary his response was that I didn’t need it (as I didn’t want children). My dad was dying from cancer at the same time so the timing of my illness was devastating. I chose not to get a second opinion. I asked to keep my right ovary and not to have an epidermal for my surgery. I heard him, pre-op, ask his staff if they would turn down an epidermal for this surgery. Post-op he critiqued my use of morphine and when it was determined it wasn’t ovarian cancer but stage 4 endometriosis (and an accompanying endometrioma which he removed) he told me to google endometriosis. He also shamed me for keeping my right ovary, did not remove any endometriosis, and also informed me he also removed my appendix. Fortunately the incision was smaller- only 8 inches. But I am appalled with how I was treated both pre- and post-op and in the end I now realize the ovary and endometrioma could have been removed laparoscopically. I’m left w a big scar and no uterus for no reason.
