I can’t possibly speak any higher of Dr Steel. I’ve been to 3 x top neurosurgeons this year from a chronic low back pain injury and he is by far the most thorough, caring, understanding and professional professor out there. He took the time to go through my scans with me and explain everything in detail. His receptionist were all so lovely and vibrant and willing to help. The atmosphere in the waiting room- you can just tell they love working together

Professor Steel operated on my husband just over 2 years ago , removing a tumour from his spine. We were very concerned and saw many specialists before we decided on Professor Steel as his surgeon,. We were very impressed by Professor Steel. He explained the procedure so thoroughly and pointed out his areas of concern and what he could do during the surgery to minimise the risks of my husbands operation. His explanations and experience gave us a lot of confidence. The surgery went very well and Professor steel removed all the tumour without any damage to the spine. He had pain in the area of the incision for some weeks but otherwise had no problems. We have just had a check MRI scan 2 years after the surgery and have received the wonderful news that he remains free of the tumour. Professor Steel is amazing and we are forever grateful to him and his team.

Professor Steel and his team were reassuring and professional. Professor Steel did exactly what he told me he would. I was home the day after the surgery and have had no problems since the operation. I am very pleased I had Professor Steel and his team looking after me. MR

I was referred to this Nuerosurgeon for an opinion in 2009 and he ended up operating on my spine in September 2009. After operating on me with a lumbar microdiscetomy on L4/L5 S1, he kept me in St Vinvents Private for x3 weeks with no rehabilitation offered and then sent me home on high doses of opiates. This was the beginnings of my ongoing chronic spinal pain. This surgery was not successful even though my referring GP, advised me that I was in good hands, but she did pre-warn me of his background in the press which I was quite concerned about when I looked this up. Further to this, I temporarily relocated to Brisbane as my dear Mother who has since sadly passed away, suffered a major stroke prior to this surgery so I wanted to be close to my Mum. I especially organised and confirmed a day trip back to Sydney on 9 December 2009 (Confirmation of flights flown attached) and after confirmation of the post op appointment with this Nuerosurgeon receptionist twice on the phone, I flew back for the day only to step off the plane and find a voicemail message from his extremely rude receptionist at the time advising me that this Nuerosurgeon was called for emergency surgery and that my appointment was canceled. I was offered no apology and or alternative post op appointment and as a result I never got to see him for a post op appointment. I have recently found out after investigating with the referring GP and my medical records that he had written to her advising that I was unable to see him due to my mother’s health. This was not the case at all and I am absolutely appalled that this was conveyed back to my referring GP of 11 years, who said that I was in good hands. I have had a further x2 spinal surgeries with a different Nuerosurgeon at St Vinvents Hospital and even though still to this day, I struggle with chronic pain after x3 spinal surgeries in total, I am absolutely appalled about the way in which this Nuerosurgeon handled himself. Not only was the procedure the beginnings of my chronic pain and clearly not successful, as mentioned I was sent home on very high doses of opiates by him, no rehabilitation and I especially flew back to Sydney to see him for the post op and he canceled the appointment. Still to this day I struggle reducing the opiates overprescribed then by my treating GP of 11 years from January 2008 - March 2019. I would not recommend this Nuerosurgeon at all. MM

For more than a year I suffered back pain, visiting my physiotherapist on a regular basis, but the relief was only temporary. My Dr. referred me to Professor Steel, St Vincents Hospital, so in my 60th year the idea of back surgery was extremely daunting. However, from the day following my surgery I have been pain free and after 4 - 6 weeks, I was able to live an active and full life I thank Professor Steel and his staff for their kindness and professionalism.

I had to get a surgery on very short notice and Dr. Steel was very helpful - he asked for extra theatre time and snuck me within a week. 3 months later i'm fully recovered!

I have had Professor Steel perform two spinal surgeries on me in the past 6 months. From the initial consult every step was explained to me in terms I could understand and any questions I had were answered in great detail, even though there were people in the waiting room. So I had no issues whenever I had to wait for Professor Steel as I knew someone else was gaining benefit from his high level of knowledge and professionalism.
The level of care shown by Professor Steel and his staff is second to none and that was my reason for choosing him to perform the surgeries I required. I was concerned with an issue after my surgery and he came in to visit me on a Saturday and diagnosed the issue and it was treated straight away. Even to this day I am in regular contact with Professor Steel as he checks on my recovery.
It is quite clear to see his high level of skill, professionalism and compassion and I absolutely trust any medical advice given by him. I’m grateful that he and his staff have been able to make a difficult time a lot easier and the peace of mind knowing I have had the best in the business look after me.
Would highly recommend Professor Steel to anyone.
