Dr. Van Rooyen evaluated my son 9 years ago (2010). I’m not the type who writes reviews, but I was just asked by a friend if I knew about Dr. Van Rooyen for his son, so I thought it may be a good idea to share our experience, especially given the reflection of time.
Our son had special learning needs and anxiety issues, he went to a special school and was treated by a psychiatrist for a few years. We went to Dr. Van Rooyen to evaluate our son when he was 17, before applying for college and provided him with detailed background from us, and our son’s school advisor and psychiatrist.
Upon his evaluation, Dr. Van Rooyen provided us with a report, which was mostly based on statistics, and concluded that our son was not ready for college and noted that he may be able to attend community college, with a lot of additional help, and may be able to transfer at a later time.
My wife and I found Dr. Van Rooyen to be very arrogant throughout the process. It seemed to us that Dr. Van Rooyen was solely relying on some sort of computer modeling and numbers (the written evaluation in his report was pretty much the information we provided him at the beginning of the process), and while he was being very intellectual about the process, I found him to lack wisdom; he never had any doubts, any options, and altogether, didn’t seem to understand that there’s something beyond the numbers. Oddly, the process felt as if it was mostly about him, not our son..
My wife and I paid our bill, left the office, looked at each other and at that moment decided to forget about the process altogether.
In the meantime, our son was accepted to one of the country top art university, graduated in 4 years, has a job at a private school and is pursuing his music career.
I recognize that 9 years have passed since we hired Dr. Van Rooyen, but I’d highly recommend any potential parents to do their research and take any recommendations with a grain of salt.

Dr. Van Rooyen has worked with us twice. He has assessed our son over the span of a few years. He presents the results in a professional manner, and with sensitivity. Results are also professionally written up for the school, and easy for educators to understand. He has a good rapport with patients. We appreciate that Dr. Van Rooyen is not only concerned about a diagnosis, but with finding strategies to help our child grow. He assists in coming up with a game plan, so we can move forward. The referrals he has given us have been successful.

Really surprised by these two reviews. Dr. Van Rooyen did an assessment on our nine year old son, now 10, who is mixed race . We are two moms and an adoptive family and we found him to be incredibly sensitive, completely unbiased racially or otherwise and very knowledgeable. His report was very thorough and well organized. He explained it all to us very clearly. Our son loves him and he continues to see Dr. Van Rooyen on a weekly basis for therapy which has been very successful. He met with us and our son's teachers, school administrator and psychologist to help them understand how our son learns. He responds quickly to emails and is willing to get on the phone to discuss any questions we have (free of charge). Anyway, he was recommended to us by other parents at our school who were really happy with him and we continue to have a great experience with him. Would highly recommend him to anyone.

The assessment Andre Van Rooyen did with my child turned out to be very racially biased as my child is of mixed race. Cultural diversity should be part of this type of assessment. I found him to be not very knowledgeable and up with current research and findings with regard to child development in gender and race. However, he did refund our money after much time was wasted.

Please do yourself a favor and find a different neuropsychologist to your child's assessment. We had so many problems with our assessment. The work was sloppy.
