Biography
Bio: From the coal miners' town of Scranton, PA I learned young that if something is broken get it fixed fast and strong, and take the time tofigure out what broke it. That's how I do therapy. I became interested in psychology having grown up with family members who survived with PTSD from working the mines and serving in war. I determined early on that I could be one of those who could help others stand up to what they needed to overcome. I volunteered as a peer support counselor in high school and in college. Though a normal long-haired college kid in the 70's with all its challenges, I studied hard, (knowing scholarships were the only way to get through graduate school), and graduated summa cum laude. I applied to and was accepted into what I considered one of the best analytic psychology graduate institutes in the country, and was fortunate enough to be awarded National Institute of Mental Health Fellowships. I focused my doctoral research in the areas of trauma and life-threatening experience and its effects. I interned in a VA hospital working with veterans from 3 wars. My first professional position was in Colorado in a community mental health center, as a full time psychotherapist on the crisis/triage team. I began a private practice while finishing my research here in Colorado, and have had my office in the Oxford Hotel Annex since 1984. I strongly believe that psychotherapy should be affordable, effective, and private. It is very important that people coming to see me get relief quickly, plus discover the foundational dynamics of their problems so that the relief lasts. As a Preferred Provider for most insurances, I offer a wide-ranging sliding scale for fees. I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques determined only by what is best to treat the problem, and guarantee complete professional confidentiality. I practice in a comfortable and warm stand alone office in a quiet and discreet private practice setting. Located in the heart of Lodo, in the Oxford Hotel Annex building, there is also convenient free parking available. Video sessions can also be arranged. I provide both short term and ongoing psychotherapy. I started my profession as a crisis counselor and learned to listen intently and act quickly. At the same time after years of practice, and being trained in analysis, I also leaned that there are many dynamics that determine patterns of behavior and distressed emotion, from the demands of everyday living, to life changing events past and present, to interpersonal conflict, and intimacy. All of these and more may need to be explored and their effects understood to create lasting relief and change. I am open to using many established therapy techniques singly or in combination, as long as they have benefit, while always striving to help gain insight, self-awareness, and perspective, to solidify change and personal growth. My ultimate goal is to help people leave therapy not only feeling relief and having solved a problem, but be a better person who has grown from the experience.
