Biography
Dr. Christopher Selgrath is a fellowship-trained, board certified, orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive joint replacement of the shoulder, hip, and knee. He currently practices at the Muscle, Bone, and Joint Center and operates at Aria Health’s Torresdale, Bucks, and Frankford divisions and has been in practice since 2004. Dr. Selgrath specializes in both routine and complex primary joint replacements of the hip and knee, while also taking on the difficult revision surgeries sent to him from other local orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Selgrath is one of a few surgeons in the Philadelphia area performing partial knee replacement with the Oxford prosthesis and also performs Quad-Sparing Total Knee Replacement surgery, thus allowing for a more rapid recovery after surgery. Dr. Selgrath completed his undergraduate education at LaSalle University and was a Master’s of Science candidate in Molecular Biology at Villanova University before graduating from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) with Honors. Upon graduation, Dr. Selgrath accepted a five-year residency position in Orthopaedic Surgery at Graduate Hospital/PCOM. While in residency Dr. Selgrath completed his shoulder and elbow training at the Rothman Institute under the guidance of Drs. Mark Lazarus and John Fenlen, trained with world renowned, and then director of the Joint Replacement Program at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Paul Lotke (one of the founding fathers of joint replacement of the knee in North America), and completed his trauma training at Cooper University’s Level 1 Trauma Center in Camden, NJ. Dr Selgrath also received the honor of being elected, by his peers and attending staff, Chief Resident during his final year of training. After residency, and under the guidance of Dr. Lotke, Dr. Selgrath accepted a fellowship position at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. While in fellowship, Dr Selgrath performed over 1200 joint replacement surgeries of the hip and knee, and was awarded the honor of First Place in the national research competition held at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting in San Francisco in 2004. Dr. Selgrath is a current board member on the 100-year-old Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society and is a past president of the Adult Reconstruction section of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedic surgeons.He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Society, Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society, and the American Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Selgrath also has been awarded the status of Fellow, analogous to a lifetime achievement award, by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Selgrath also sits on the board of directors of the non-profit foundation For Pete’s Sake, which provides respites for young cancer patients and their families during their battle against cancer. Dr. Selgrath is happily married to his wonderful wife Elizabeth and has four beautiful children, Nathan, Emerson, Benjamin, and Griffin. Dr. Selgrath enjoys participating in Triathlons, running marathons, and coaching his children’s basketball and baseball teams.
