In February 2013 Dr Hawkens performed a Traditional Hip Replacement surgery on my right hip. I had just turned 55, slim for my age and height, but I had suffered for years with lower back pain, RA, Lupus, Graves Disease, the list is long. I am also a female smoker, who always worked traditional mens jobs. Warehouse, Service Tech gaffing telephone poles, heavy lifting. I prided myself on being in great shape. The 5 years prior to surgery, radiation, one illness after another, and still I worked 60-70 hours a week, running around in 4 inch high heels. I kept going until I woke up one April morning in 2012, I could not walk, and the pain, excruciating. My son carried me into the ER. Both hips bone on bone. But from continuing to walk I developed a Subcondrol Cyst, making the pain unbearable. I live in Manassas, I went to 4 other so called Top Orthopaedic Surgeons, all gave me different options for surgery, Ceramic, Frontal, even Synovial Replacement. I called my ON GUN I had been going to for almost 40 years. I. Ask Him Who Would He Recommend? Samuel Hawkens he said. I ask a Pulmonary Specialist in DC I've known almost 40 years, he said Samuel Hawken. I got the same name 4 times. I suffered for months, Dr Hawkens saw me right away. This was at the middle of December 2012, I had been off work for a month. He told me straight out, I had put mine off so long masking the pain with large amounts of pain medication, that the only thing he would do is a THR. This is a big surgery and the prosthesis is heavy. HE told me straight out since I had taken so much pain medication for years that I was going to feel the pain after surgery, and realistically 2 years to recover. The first year was torture, at times I wanted to die, a walker barely held me, I couldn't stand, balance, I thought life was over, include listening to him and getting weened off of 5 years of very heavy pain meds. I went from making over 6 figures a year to SSDisability. But my son pushed me constantly to get up and walk, exercise when I wanted to lay down. 17 months, down to a 3rd of the meds and a cane. And almost exactly 2 years after surgery? No pain, no lower back pain, my legs are as even as you can get. It's now almost 28 months after surgery, YOU have to look very close to see the hairline scratch that was an 18 in scar, rear entry. I walk normally, no MORE pain meds, have cut my smoking more then in half, slim, can wear heels, dancing, riding a bike, I have a life again, and a new career. No more depression, I'm healthy and happier than I've been in 10 years. The left hip? Doesn't bother me yet, may never. Yes, I feel more then a few times, never damaged that hip. He is by far The Best Surgeon, I trust him with my life. If I need the left done some day I will have him do it. If he is retiring and it's not bothering me, I will have him do it anyway. He doesn't BS, told the truth, held nothing back, my worst mistakes, ignoring it, and increasing amounts of pain medication. If I hadn't done that, would not have been near as bad. I highly highly recommend Dr Samuel Hawkens, his skills, knowledge, he's an artist, and I'm a 57 year old having a blast! Thank you for giving me back my life, and Martha, his terrific assistant who answered every cry, every call. Susan Z
