This is going to be a long review.Back in 2006, I was diagnosed with a parotid gland tumor through basic palpation. I had just turned 18 years old, was a senior in high school and was scared. My family had heard about Dr. Piorkowski through a friend who told us he was the best. It's true. The procedure for removal should have been about five hours, but instead ran almost nine due to years of misdiagnosis and my facial nerves literally growing into the tumor and being underdeveloped. He had no choice but to cut all the nerves except my lower lip and eyebrow (right side) and stimulate what remained of the others in hopes that they would grow. I remember him being in my room shortly after I woke up with sincere apologies and a hand held mirror which he held up to show me what exercises to practice to hopefully regain some movement. I was paralyzed on that side for maybe two years, but the whole time I slowly regained movement because Dr. Piorkowski's skill. Today, eight years later, I have full movement, save for a kinda lazy/squint right eye that I only notice, and most sensation back to that entire side of my face, neck and ear. My scar is barely noticeable, in fact the drain insertion site is pointed out to me more. The staff he worked with were always up to pay with him. Really though, everything else is paled compared to being able to blink without the force of hand, or whistling and wiggling my whole nose when it itches. I honestly believe if I had gone to someone else, I would not have come out with the same excellent results.

To make a long story short.. Dr. Piorkowski found a cancerous tumor in my breast that was not detected on the mammogram or ultrasound. Even the physician who performed the biopsy he ordered didn't seem to think a biopsy was necessary which necessitated a call to Dr Piorkowski to defend why it was medically necessary. My life may have been saved because of his level of experience and expertise and his individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment. If you are his patient... You will receive the best care possible... He will make sure of it.

Dr. Piorkowski is an excellent surgeon, often rushed with appointments, but always concerned about his patients. He explains to patients what he can and cannot do and is straighforward with effects on patients. Sometimes he does six to ten surgeries a day and I am sure he gets tired, but he gives himself completely to his patients.

This punctuality issue is because this guy is there for you from dx to discharge. I have been on the receiving end of an urgent visit and am aware that others have also. I will wait if I have to.

Dr. P operated on my son for h/n cancer... although he is very busy and can be brusque, I liked him a lot in the end. The 1st visit was a shocker, unlike any I'd experienced. Getting the dx of CA is overwhelming, so I don't know if any doctor would have been great. He was very positive and hopeful with us(even tho the CA was bad). I didn't let his style put me off. If I had questions, I waited (hrs.) till his day was over, so he had the time to sit with us. I think he would do best with pro active patients. He's an excellent surgeon and we remember him fondly. P.S. my son is cancer free-- going on 5 yrs.

I was referred to Dr. Piorkowski after a "suspicious" mammogram. I credit him with saving my life. The only question was around the need for chemotherapy - I wish he had discussed the options with me and his recommendations prior to my oncologist visit.
