Dr. Wesner has now retired. He was a wonderful psychiatrist, the only of his kind remaining in Eastern Iowa. He was both therapist and a 'prescriber' where these days in mental health facilities you get one or the other. He took time to listen about what was going on in my life beyond my symptoms, told stories that were relevant, was receptive to my needs and very kind and understanding during a time of profound grief after losing my younger sister to cancer. He was easy to talk to and 'real'. Plus he had fantastic dogs who were sweet and therapeutic as well. I mourn the loss of him as my mental health care provider and mourn the end of this model of care, which I hope will someday become standard again. Thank you, Dr. Wesner. I miss you very much. I hope you enjoy your retirement.

I felt extremely uncomfortable here. The staff is nice but I felt dismissed every time I saw him. He gave me wildly incorrect information on my diagnosis. For some of my symptoms, he argued with me about the severity, saying everyone experiences those things on the same level- not true. I was in his office because other people in my life were really concerned about these symptoms and they were very upset with the way this was addressed. A few of my other symptoms are admittedly extremely rare, however, what I did not want to hear was that out of his many years of experience and thousands of patients, I was the only one who had these issues. I was already struggling and scared- while honesty is good, it should have been handled in a way that didn’t also make me feel alone and helpless.
I did not stay here long. I was immediately given high dosage increases and medication we didn’t discuss almost at all… disconcerting to say the least.
Glad to see he has helped some people but I would discourage becoming a client.

I saw Dr. Wesner in the summer of 2005, after our family moved here from Mason City. I had known Dr. Wesner in the 1980s when I was nurse in Child Psychiatry at UIHC. I was shocked when I saw him for the first time, as he had become morbidly obese. He became out of breath just walking from his office door to his desk. I had been treated for anxiety and depression since the 1980s and my symptoms worsened after our move. Unfortunately, Dr. Wesner's response was to double my dose of Klonopin from 3mg/day to 6mg/day. Klonopin is a VERY habit-forming medication and though it initially made me feel better, the VERY high dose of 6 mg created many, many problematic issues. To top it off, Dr. Wesner talked to my persistent sister about my case. This totally violated doctor-patient confidentiality and in this day and age, could even get him fired. I switched physicians and shortly thereafter learned that Wesner had entered rehab for alcohol abuse. What a horrible experience!!

Thank you for your compassion. You have helped me and continue to help me bring peace to my mind, body, and the relationships in my life. I am learning to enjoy the high points in my day to day life and persevere through the difficulties that life throws at me.

As I enter middle age, for the first time in my life, I am communicating with my spouse honestly. Thank you for facilitating this through your kind words and clinical expertise. You are succeeding where others have struggled for the last decade. I look forward to our visits and wait for the next time I get to meet with you.

Couldn't have asked for a better psychiatrist. I've been in the care of Dr. Wesner for years. He worked a very tough case of depression into remission, and I've continued with him for maintenance appointments even though I've since moved. He's demonstrated extreme skill in selecting and explaining treatment options. Maybe more importantly, his empathy and calm, friendly demeanor make me feel like I'm more in the care of a friend than a doctor. Dr. Wesner is an excellent choice for anyone suffering from mental illness, but especially if you are apprehensive about starting treatment.

Dr Wesner is always attentive, respectful and helpful. He has been willing to go out of his way to answer questions and offer aid outside of sessions or during difficult times. If you are willing to work honestly and directly with his straightforward and fair guidelines, the experience will be motivational and rewarding.

I've been a patient for over six years now, and I can honestly say that I've never had an experience with a health provider that's been as rewarding as I've had with Dr. Wesner. Dr. Wesner and his Office Manager, Bonnie (who is awesome), are dedicated to providing the best care possible. They're flexible and accommodating with scheduling, and they're quick to follow up when things like prescription refills/questions arise. I started seeing Dr. Wesner at a very tumultuous time in my life six years ago, and with his guidance I was able to make real progress and heal. I encourage anyone in the area to consider Dr. Wesner for their mental healthcare needs, I know you won't regret it!
